It seems to me that the following part of the setup failed...

< quote>

First, set up POP in Gmail

On your computer, open Gmail.
In the top right, click Settings.
Click Settings.
Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
In the "POP Download" section, select Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on.
At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.

I am no expert though and it might be something else that is wrong.

You can get the note to login to the web whenever Gmail identifies a security issue. Web login offers more secure authentication than POP3, as well as access to configuration settings, including authorizing less secure POP3 access for applications.

Gmail is very clear what is required in the error message. That seems to be a good thing, easy to understand.

David I think I will avail myself of a previous suggestion you made just use the forwarding feature that is uncomplicated
