Last Name as your Email Domain - What Do You Think?
For example, if my last name was Smith:
name @ smith. net I'm thinking of changing to this format, and thus always having my last name for email and maybe even a website for fun stuff etc. Are there any concerns over identity theft problems? I know many people who use firstname.lastname @ gmail. com etc. Opinions? Moderator: Removed a persons first name and fixed live addresses. Last edited by Sherry : 30 Jan 2009 at 02:08 PM. |

You'd be a lucky person to be able to have your last name as your domain. Mine is way too common and I'm sure was registered in the early days of the internet

If your last name is still available as a .com domain, then run and buy it as fast as you can.
But an address like name @ smith. com will attract a lot of spam. You need to use something less obvious, i.e. firstnamemiddlename @ smith. com (assuming John is your middle name). Also, the advantage of having your own domain is that you can use catchall to defeat spam. I.e. when you visit a website example.com where you need to leave your email address, leave the address example.com @ smith. com. If you ever get spam to that address, it will be easy to know who is the culprit, and block the address. Mod: Fixed live addresses and names. Last edited by Sherry : 30 Jan 2009 at 02:09 PM. |

Well...I did it!
I got my last name as a .net domain. lastname . net ( . com was already taken by Net Identity) I just jumped into my Fastmail account and activated it. |

Congratulations, Ken7 ! My name is very common, and is also shared with probably the most famous athlete in recent times, so there was no question I wouldn't get mine.
I'm happy for you, though |

My name is quite common so for a family account I put "the" in front of my name and "s" after it and found it was available. So if my name was Brown, the domain would be @thebrowns.net.
I was going to use smith as an example and then realised that "thesmiths" is the name of one of the best rock groups ever. We stopped using it after a while and now we each use a different email address. |

I've got the .ca and .net on my last name. Hoping to get the .com when it becomes available.
