Post Validation of "From" addresses

We now require validation when users add new "From" addresses in Webmail:Preferences, to prevent falsification of messages by abusers.

If you enter an unknown address which is not among your aliases, virtual domain addresses, or previously validated addresses, a message will be sent to the provided address with a link containing a unique key.

Once you click the link and verify that the provided address belongs to you, the address can be used when sending messages from Webmail.

Previously registered "From" addresses will continue to work without validation.

Is the use of validated "From" addresses enforced by the SMTP server when sending from email clients?

Rich

Might I suggest you also add the "folder_id" to the validation link so that it shows the information for the proper Folder Preferences when you validate the email address.

Right now it always goes to the "Inbox" Folder Preferences.

I verified that adding the "&folder_id=#####", where ##### is the folder number, would work to show the proper Folder Preferences.

Rich

Will it be possible to validate *@mydomain.com ?

Hi Geir,

I own my own domain and forward email to runbox.

Is there a mechanism to pre-approve all email addresses from that domain and my account.

Runbox has no involvement in the running of the domain - ie you don't provide dns etc.

Sorry if it's a dumb question it's been a while since I frequented the forum so I'm behind on the discussion and terminology used

Thanks,

Alan.

I agree. If you're hosting domains with the your Runbox account then any address off those domains should be automatically accepted as valid "From" address.

And that may be how it does work.

I just tried several new addresses of my Runbox hosted domain and I didn't have to validate it first.

Correct -- any localpart on a virtual domain you administer is allowed, to be consistent with the "catch all" functionality.

unhappy

I get this message - "A validation email has been sent to the "From" address specified.
Once you have validated the address by clicking a link in the message,
you can use the new "From" address in the Compose screen.
The settings were successfully updated "

The email then goes to my runbox TRASH????

When I clicked to validate the message I get another message saying it cannot be validated. I have two domain names being forwarded to runbox. One is for business.

WHY????

Now emails to my two Runbox addresses are going to TRASH.

Why the change??? This is driving me nuts. Not what I paid for.

I assume your "Trash" folder is your spam folder too. That could be why it went there if it was flagged as spam. Runbox does not automatically whitelist they're own addresses.

The only reason I've seen it not validate an address is when the "key" in the link is not correct for the email address listed.

You can go back to the Folder Preferences and save again to get another validation email sent and try that one.

Rich

SteveJ,

We had to start validating From addresses because abusers used it to falisify sender addresses (so-called "phishing").

You should not have to validate addresses on a domain you have set up with Runbox, however.

Apparently you have no invalidated From addresses now. Please post back if you're still having trouble.

I found the problem. What has happened is that my emails sent to my email accounts (all under SteveJ) 'rainman@runbox.com' and musicman@RB are going straight into the trash folder for some reason. I did not change any settings I know of. But at any rate I did not see the validation email because it went into the trash folder. Why are my emails suddenly going into the trash? Am I doing something wrong?

Mod: Munged 2nd "live" email address to avoid spam bots.

Hi SteveJ,

Many spammers use an automatic program that surfs the "codes" on web sites looking for email addresses. The second address you posted looked like johndoe@example.com See how that address turned blue and can be clicked on to send an email to someone. Spam bots can read the forum "code" and it gets added to there list and sold to other spammers. If you click on the Quote button on this post you will see the code they pick up...
