Schhh it is top secret so don't reveal this to anybody.

Very embarrassing but I have no idea what a Groundhog is.
I know a lot of animal name in English from Animal Planet and
Sir David Attenborough and Dennis Morris and many others.

Seen every show with Jane Goodall and such. But Groundhogs?

Yes yes but to look them up in Google is to cheat folks.
I should know what it is without having to look them up.
No sport if one do such tricks. what on earth could it be.

A kind of Wild Pig or a rodent type of animal? Oh well...

You (or at any rate someone with a very similar nick and writing style) asked the same question in this very thread back in 2005. Back then, my EMD alter-ego (which I no longer use, at least for the time being) replied that groundhogs are a North American rodent, similar to the squirrel. In the UK, the Candlemas/Imbolc animal is the hedgehog (which likewise is a rodent, not a wild pig) and in Germany I think it's the badger.

Hedgehog I have met several such in our garden during my childhood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedgehog

If he had a handle close to mine like Trew and wrote in similar style
then it most likele was me. I have a poor memory indeed.

we have European Badgers for sure ,very rare though. Never in populated areas only deep in woods. Not same animal I guess.

I'd completely forgotten about this thread until SusanUKF reminded me in the "snow in London" thread.

What did any groundhog (or local equivalent) say this year? I hate cold weather...

I think it was unanimous that it will be another 6 weeks of winter. I didnt need a groundhog to tell me that... so much snow this winter!

I drove down to Victoria yesterday (from northern Vancouver Island) it was a very beautiful day, with sunny weather all the way down the west coast. The Daffodils will be blooming for sure come March (at least in Southern Vancouver island) regardless of how long the winter may last
