myopera.com is closing

All the services including email will be shut down on March 1, 2014

What will happen with your My Opera email?

The service will, as with My Opera, be discontinued. In the meantime, we suggest you sign up for a new provider and make sure to take care of the emails you want to save. Also, it would be a good idea to set up an auto-reply in your My Opera email to inform your contacts of your new email address. Here are a few free email providers you may want to check out:

Gmail by Google
Our friends at Fastmail
Outlook by Microsoft
Yahoo! Mail
Mail.com
And many more, as suggested by About.com

I think it is financely motivated.
Not much money to gain from a free mail service?

Bust still kind of sad. Luckily I use gmail and yahoo
and hotmail/outlook and had myopera as a reserve.

Not a free provider for a while.

That is disappointing news, especially as my My Opera Mail was upped to 3000 MB in recent months.

Still, life goes on . . .

As a side comment, perhaps now that MyOpera mail is going to be retired, the Opera team might consider letting FM have all rights (or whatever is necessary) to the web interface design so that it could be used as another 'theme' for FM. I personally have always found the MyOpera version of the interface more aesthetically pleasing.

This is indeed sad news:-( Another free, good email service bits the dust.

For me this service was pretty fast en reliable.

Time to say goodbye to the big four (gmail, yahoo, outlook and AOL) imho and look for other free alternatives.

Right now Yandex and mail.ru are doing a great job...:-)

Bad bad news. OK, I can imagine the technical reason to shutdown the blog and email. However I can't understand why they would want to throw away their passionate community.
I'm also very sad about the discontinuation of Myopera mail, unlike Gmail or Outlook, it wasn't a service created for advertisement and data mining.
They shutting down all products that made Opera special. IMO their branding is changing in the wrong way.

Yes, which is likely at least part of the story, of the Opera/Fastmail split.

It was a pathetic service. Unattractive domain name, rude customer service and no innovation. Users used to get blocked without any reason and had to request for unblocking of their accounts. This happened to many users who never violated any TOS.

If Fastmail are "friends" rather than owned by Opera + they recommend it as an option for a new mailbox to use once MyOpera quits ... Then I assume that Fastmail.fm will remain around for the distant future and that those of us who had a free Fastmail account can maintain it?

I still have Fastmail for free as I signed up long before it became a paid service. I hope MyOpera's "friends at Fastmail" will keep their accounts free for those who signed up back in the days it was free for anyone?

Fastmail has two types of grandfathered accounts which have no ongoing fees.
  • Member account (one-time fee)
    • The Member account was set up with a one-time fee as a way for users to get familiar with Fastmail before upgrading to a yearly subscription account with more features. The Member fee was applied to the first yearly subscription fee when you upgraded. The initial Member fee proved to be too low, and it was increased to $14.95.
    • New signups were discontinued in December, 2008
    • Ad Free account level to be launched, Member level signups to be removed: "We’re not making any changes to existing users, the only change is that from 2009, you won’t be able to signup a new Member level account. Users with existing Member level accounts will stay exactly as they are."
    • The inactivity period is 120 days. After that interval, the account will be permanently closed.
  • Guest (free account set up for prospective customers to investigate the Fastmail features with limited advertising)
    • New signups discontinued in October, 2012.
    • Changes to FastMail service levels: "To this end, we are discontinuing sign-ups and downgrades to the Guest service level. Existing Guest accounts will continue to work. We have no plans to cancel active Guest accounts. However, if a Guest account is deactivated because it has not been used for 120 days, then it will not be reactivated."
