How to Use a Rotary Laser Level for Fence Building

How to Use a Rotary Laser Level for Fence Building

You may think the alignment and building of your fence is a very daunting task but with the best laser level for fence building, you can easily achieve your aim. With proper fencing, you can create a private yard and fortunately, a rotary laser level works with all fencing materials, be it wood, metal, or concrete. Your design will use fence posts as support structures. With your rotary laser level, you can align your fence posts in a straight line. A self-leveling electronically powered rotary laser level will help generate a straight line for your fencing. The following steps are necessary to complete your fencing with a rotary laser level.

Step 1: Position Your Tripod and Attach Your Laser Level

Fortunately, you don’t need to find an accurate flat surface to place your laser level as the device can self-level or readjust its angle when tampered with. Place your tripod at the end of your fence line, then adjust the tripod legs until the bubble has indicated a level plane. Simply attach your laser level to the tripod in a vertical position. The laser level head should appear sideways when you look directly at it (Make sure you wear your safety goggles and don’t look in direct opposite to the laser). Make sure it can project along the fence line. For this project, you will need several items to complete the work. You will need wooden stakes or posts and if necessary, you will need a shovel.

Step 2: Verify the Attachment of Laser to Tripod and Turn on the Device

You should verify the attachment of your rotary laser level to the tripod by hand-tightening the threaded bell assembly. Loose laser levels may likely fall off the tripod and may trip over, causing you to reset the device. Turn on the laser level by pushing the appropriate button. You may want to refer to your user manual for specific instructions on operating your laser level. There are several buttons on the laser level and you should be familiar with their functions. Once you turn on the laser, the laser beam should be bright enough to reach the end of your fence line. Though the laser level is self-leveling you still have to manually readjust the device to bring it to the right angle of operation

Step 3: Operate the Laser Level for Your Fencing.

The next step will be to confirm that your laser level is in its vertical plane by simply observing the moving head of the laser level. The laser level should re-adjust itself within a few seconds if it is out of its vertical range. Once it attains the right angle, the laser level will illuminate its laser diode for laser projection.

You should allow the laser level to rotate at an angle of 360 degrees and you can adjust the laser level by changing its speed but keep in mind that you will need the device to project a laser in its stationary mode for building your fence. Occasionally, you may need a slow speed projection of laser if you are adding some components to your fencing. If you are using an electrically powered laser level, make sure you have a source of electricity supply or if the device operates on AAA batteries.

Step 4: Reposition Your Rotary Laser Level If Necessary

Place your laser sensor into the provided bracket, then lock the bracket into the two by four. Hold your fence vertically straight at the position of your next fence. Adjust the sensor by gently moving your fence piece from the left to right until the laser projection strikes it. The sensor will beep and then indicate a very visible line on display at this. The best rotary laser level should project a strong beam of the laser from one surface to another without losing accuracy. Once you have repositioned your laser level, you can rest assured of getting the right elevation for your fencing.

Step 5: Construct Your Fence

Insert the wooden stake into the ground at the same physical location as it has been located by the sensor. The stake you insert will indicate an aligned fence post position. Simply move the sensor and then attach the wood piece back to your next fence post position.

You should continue to add more fence posts to the ground at each fence position until the completion of fencing in that direction. Finally, you can add your fence posts at each of the staked points with the use of a shovel. If you follow the staked point with the help of the rotary laser level, you should be able to complete your fencing with ease.

Using Rotary Laser Level for Fencing- The Bottom Line

Your fencing with rotary laser level can be much fun if you have a complete self leveling rotary laser level kit. This kit should contain a laser detector that can help you extend the range of your laser line. You will also need safety goggles for protection against laser accidental contact with your eyes. Rotary laser levels are class 2 laser levels hence they must be handled with ultimate care. In addition to the safety goggles, perhaps a pair of gloves will be very important especially when working outside.

Choosing the right rotary laser level is very important in achieving the right results. There are rotary laser levels designed for indoor and those made for both indoor and outdoor. Outdoor laser levels may not cover enough range for outdoor projects. Make sure you check the range of laser devices in addition to other components of your laser level kits. There are several other outdoor projects you can handle with your laser level, landscaping, patio, and deck construction are just a few of such.

You can set yourself a reminder on the Google calendar that automatically sends you an email at the set date. Not sure about how far out you can do it, but I routinely get sent emails from my calendar for things I set a year or more ago--birthday reminders and things like that.

Are you sure you'll be using the same email address in 10 years' time?

Arrow Calendar reminder

I just set up a calendar entry (with reminder email) for 10 years into the future (18 August 2030) in both Gmail (Google Calendar) and Fastmail. If this forum and those two services still exist without changes in a decade (and I'm still alive), I will report here how well these work.

My personal domain was purchased in August 1999 (21 years ago). My Fastmail account has been active now for 16 years, and my Gmail account for 15 years. So I guess these services might be around in another decade without forgetting these calendar entries.
