Horror movie remakes...

First there was the remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and now soon to be released is the remake of The Amittyville Horror http://www.amityvillehorrormovie.com/ (warning: although the move is rated 18+ the website doesn't seem to contain anything too graphic. Go to the website at your own discretion) There was also the prequel to the exorcist, which I found quite graphic and kinda scary.

What do you think of horror remakes/prequels? Do you think the originals are the best, or do you think the remakes are great?

I think the remakes are awesome as they bring the movie to a whole new audience, plus the remakes are alot spookier due to special effects etc. Besides who wants to watch the cheesy 80's special effects when you can see the remake

Whats your thoughts?

Edit: I do, however, think that originals can be better - only when the remakes fail to convey the storyline effectively.

Some remakes are fine. I liked the remake of " Night Of the Living Dead".

remakes in general seem to be a sort of creative "dead-end" though. And the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was somehow more frightening in its low-budget original form- it seemed somehow like some documentary that someone was filming with a home camera Alot of the effects in some of the recent movies are overkill (no pun intended)

Samara looks interesting since the original director is there to direct.

GROAN!!!! Do they HAVE to do a remake of Amityville Horror? It's like, oh the younger generation hasn't heard about this movie yet. Let's remake it and make some more money off it. It's really dumb.

I tend to hate remakes of mostly everything - songs included. I mean, can't they think of something better to do than to remake an old song or movie? Exception: one recent remake song I LOVE is the Vanessa Willams' one..."You are Everything". That was a great song then but I think VW's is even better. I just looked it up and it's on her new album - she did remakes of all these 70's songs. LOL Everlasting Love

but sorry, this is about horror movies...

They are not being remade, they are making new episode.

There's a difference between remakes and sequels.

Well, Doctor Who could be considered SciFi/Horror.

And if they have episodes with the Daleks/Cybermen etc thats kinda like a remake, maybe ?

I disagree. Remake means to retell a story that already been told before.

Just a case of not knowing when to leave well-enough alone...and also trying to make a movie when you have absolutely no fresh ideas of your own (hey, let's remake blah blah blah and put in lots more sex and nudity and blood and gore). Psycho is fine in its original form. It's also tiresome of the movie industry to keep dragging up old sitcoms and cartoons for material...I mean a Fat Albert movie? puhleeez

Re: Horror movie remakes...

Although I have not seen these remakes in their entirety, what I have seen, the trailers, and/or the reviews have convinced me that they don't/won't live up to the originals:

• Psycho
• Texas Chainsaw Massacre
• Amittyville Horror
• House of Wax
• The Fog (maybe...)

On the other hand, these remakes are worthy reinterpretations of the originals:

• Night of The Living Dead
• The Ring
• Dawn of The Dead

P.S. The Ring 2 is a terrible sequel!

According to reports, The Ring 2 is not a retell story. The director states that it is an original story for the Hollywood The Ring 1.

Either way, the Ring 2 wasnt that great a movie.
Also a remake movie, The Grudge. Personally I didnt find either the original Japanese nor the US version scary.
