HELO/EHLO error with SMTP: new computer but same settings
I am being driven mad trying to set-up my new netbook computer for outgoing email.
I have an old computer (O) and a new computer (N). O is connected to my router by network cable. N is connected via WiFi. O is running WinXP Pro sp2 N is running WinXP sp3 Both computers have same email program - The Bat 3.99.29 Professional ..... . email programs are with *identical* settings on each machine. I've checked. O computer can send mail. I normally use STARTTLS connection but an open connection also works. I've used this for years. N computer will not send using SMPT either open or STARTTLS. Nothing sends. Failure every time. What's going on?! For further into my email address is an address at my own domain so: mail sent to blahblah@blah.com is delivered to my runbox account somename@runbox.com My outgoing mail has my identity set as blahblah@blah.com This has never been a problem before so I'm presuming this is not the issue. Obviously, I am identifying myself to the SMTP server with my runbox username and password. ???? Thanks Dominic |

Hi outlawuk,
You do seem to be having an unusual problem. Could you tell us the port numbers on each machine and the server name you are trying to send email through? We can then see if there is anything else to check. Best wishes David |

David,
I am copying below the initial headers from an email sent by my working computer, to myself so you can see that smtp.runbox.com says about it all! I have obscured my email a/c details. I will attempt to send an email to myself in a few minutes using N new computer and send another message with the error message in full. I am connecting to secure.runbox.com on port 587 (it doesn't work using smtp.runbox.com port 26 either). My internet connection is via a netgear broadband router. Would runbox notice that I am using a different IP address in my home network? I'm sending the correct username and password, so am identifying myself. I'm wondering if I should momentarily turrn my router firewall off and see if that makes a difference. Similarly my WinXP firewall. I presume the HELO comes from my computer name, and O old computer is "computer" I called my N new computer "netbook". Of no relevance is that I have now tried x.x.25 version of The Bat also, hence the header. This is so confusing. Dominic,
Yes, do as Kim has asked, it will be easier to sort out your problem that way. If you find a solution that might be of use to others, please share it in this forum thread for others to see. Best wishes David |

Hi,
Perhaps you identify yourself as localhost to our server? That won't work, namely. Liz |
