Fastmail IMAP Question

I have over 10,000 messages in my Inbox. I wanted to make a new IMAP folder to copy most of these messages to.

I wanted to know if I do this from Outlook or Thunderbird does it move the mail to my local machine and copy it to the other folder or does it do it directly on the server? It will be about 1 Gig of Mail.
