northeast US power outages impacting FM???
Is the outage in the NE US and Canada hitting FM?
I'm accessing it from Virginia and can't seem to get through. |

I believe it might be. If you can reach FM, please report in. I am unable to from here, but it may be just my ISP's peering links being gone.

Down again.
---------- FastMail.FM Status Screen (Please note that all times quoted are in the server's time-zone, not your time-zone.) This screen was last refreshed at: Thu Aug 14 23:02:36 2003 The current time is Thu Aug 14 23:06:38 2003 When we last checked, the server was DOWN. The server has been down since Thu Aug 14 23:00:51 2003 An up to date server status report is already available. Here is is. Here is the server status report: The web server is not responding. I'm running diagnostics now to see what's happening. Wait a moment... Network provider responds to IP ping perfectly so the network is up. FastMail.FM responds to IP ping perfectly, so the server is up. FastMail.FM responds to name ping perfectly, so the DNS system is working. We can't open a connection to the IMAP server at all! We could ping the server, but we can't access IMAP. Sounds like there's a problem with the IMAP server software. If you're an administrator, go into the admin screen and choose 'Restart IMAP', otherwise through the forum or by emailing the webmaster. Oh dear. The tests failed. The server's down. Follow the instructions above, and if you can't get it working, and it's been 30 minutes since the first report (see above for the first problem report time), send us a pager message using the admin screen. End of server status report for Thu Aug 14 23:02:36 2003. |

Yes, the servers are in New York, aren't they? Well, could be a couple of hours before FM is back up and running again. Well, nothing to do, a lot of websites down, no email to check, read all the post in this forum.... I'm off to bed

I thought that we had debated elegant redundancy, and single points of failure?
I don't remember total reliance on servers in one geographical location, without backup power supplies being an issue. I may be wrong - I often am. |

I believe they have backup power supplies and redundent connections to the outside world. However you always need to rely on peering links and third parties. If anyone in the long line towards your connection does not have a UPS at one point in their network, their link will go down.
In all likelyhood the FM servers are happily purring along at the moment. They're just not reachable. Incoming mail is still being queued on the European server. |
