Exclamation German court forces mail provider Tutanota to insert a backdoor

https://translate.google.com/transla...n-4972460.html

Tuta is no longer "privacy first" email provider. They are forced by a court to create monitoring tool for one of their mailbox. This lead to a precedence that all mailboxes can be monitored with them. Time to move on.

And they are preparing to appeal. This is Tutanota's statement on Reddit:

"Tutanota is one of the few mail providers that encrypts the entire mailbox. The encrypted data can't be decrypted by us as only the user holds the key for decryption.

This ruling requires Tutanota to hand out newly incoming and outgoing non-encrypted emails of one suspected criminal before these are being encrypted.

The ruling does not affect any other mail account. It also does not affect already encrypted data or emails that are sent with end-to-end encryption. Only the user has access to the key so we are not able to decrypt any data.

This ruling again shows why end-to-end encryption is important. Any email sent without end-to-end encryption must be considered as not confidential and we always explain this to our users.

Edit: While we have to comply with court orders, we go to great lengths to fight for our users' privacy. That's why we will file an appeal against the decision. Furthermore, we are currently preparing an appeal to the BGH in a similar case in order to obtain a decision from the highest court."

The place to encrypt is the email client. That's been widely available for more than 20 years.

The thing I don't understand is why any email provider can be trusted to not be reading your emails or sharing them with law enforcement. Other than their word, what guarantee do any of us have with any provider? Frankly, I bet some employees have extensive access at some of the smaller providers, so we just have to trust they will do nothing nefarious with our email.

Very few at the big ones, and everything is controlled, monitored, etc. They have hundreds or thousands of security people who are monitoring employees for access. In any case, with billions of users, anything nefarious going on will soon be revealed and the chances are very slim it will impact you, being a tiny needle in an enormous haystack. On the other hand, some of the small outfits are one or two people in a basement somewhere, who just might get bored and read through your email for kicks. Hopefully, they don't also sell your information to others, or try to use your information to make money somehow. But, what assurances do you have when you sign up? For that matter, even with these encrypted services you have no idea where the backdoors might be and who has access to them.

Nevertheless I support Tutanota with a their fight for more privacy with a paid account. They come across to me as a team with good intentions (Hanna, 00:14:59).
