I buy external hard drives for storage. I keep some files online that I might need to access but not a lot. Google and Yandex are good enough for my needs.
I avoid the lesser known freebies like the plague. Most close down or go to a pay-for plan.

I have a paid 'lifetime' plan with Box and its ok. Came with a tablet purchase.

Been using Dropbox, G Drive, OneDrive variously for years. Recently came across pCloud and really like it. Some "deals" sites like StackSocial are offering 500GB lifetime subscriptions for US $60, one-time. Sweet deal, with desktop and mobile apps, all syncing nicely.
