Hello,

I am using Office 365.
Very good product with strong collaborative functions.

I am very happy with it.

A simple (simplistic?) question: Does Office365 require having some version of MS Office installed locally, or the is whole functionality available in the cloud?

It depends on which level of the Office 365 service you purchase. The cheaper ones require you to have a local copy of Office while the more expensive plans include Office as part of the package.

Actually, I am not certain if you are "required" to have Office. The e-mail features of the service may work with other clients. But Office 365 is designed to work with Office.

I've found it to be an excellent service. It has had two outages that I am aware of since it started. Both times Microsoft provided a month's service credit without any action by the customers. I think the prices are very reasonable. The push e-mail and calendar features work perfectly with the Apple iPhone...

I agree with Radiolarian

Office is not mandatory but in fact, Office 365 is built for Office users.

I have the high plan (E4) and yes, this is a cost, but this is a very great service.

Plans don't have the same SLA and services (mirroring betwen datacenter ...).

I had no outage since i am in office 365 (since the begining).

there seems to be far too many plans and also seems to be quite expensive as well.

what is the spam filtering like?

does it allow aliases / domain aliases, e.g. i haev abc1.com and abc1.net can anything to ab@abc1.net come into the same inbox as abc1.net (google apps has this)

yes some plans are expensives.

"what is the spam filtering like?"
Very good, i have access to Microsoft Forefront portal where i can have whitelist, blacklist ...
And rules like "all mail from *rrr*.net are always accepted are rejected with notification to the administrator ...
Very good for filtering.
I can have custom message in reply ...

"Why does it not allow me to put in my own domain for either trial or if I try to buy. It asks for user at .onmicrosoft.com"

Because you must have an admin account with .onmicrosoft.com for registration.
After registration, you can add your domains an your own adress mail @yourdomain.com
