App Based Logins - a step back

Have to say I am somewhat disappointed by the "app passwords" as they are a huge step backwards.
  1. Passwords are now auto-generated and are shorter and less complex than those I had set before
  2. It doesn't seem possible to set other passwords for the web or read-only passwords any more (that cannot delete e-mails)

Yes I feel it is a step backwards, customers need to make up their own code.

I almost never use any device bar my own iPad,iPhone and Mac . I don't use cybers or other peoples computers and rarely do I login via the web. My current fastmail password is 16 characters long . I to don't see any big advantage in moving to two step authentication when I will have to create app specific passwords . Are these app specific passwords then locked so that they cannot be used on anything but say my iPad if that is where I first use one of them? Could someone explain please

Thanks pjwalsh but I still don't see a major advantage. Sorry

If the password was actually going to be specific to say the apple email client on my iPad then yes . But since the app specific password can be use on any computer in any app then no I don't see the big advantage.

Does the fastmail app use two factor authentication or also app specific passwords

Thanks Terry that's better.

So the fastmail app actually uses two factor authentication . That's good.

But I wonder is there a way to always use the fastmail app And never use the native apple iOS email app I think you are stuck with the iOS email app at least for sending emails from other apps say your iOS browser. Hmmm that's too handy sending from other apps. Darn so close but still no banana!

When is the apple email client going to support two factor authentication hmmmm

Answer to my question is yes if the email app supports the type of two actor authentication that fast mail has implemented which apple has not .

Also the 2 factor system is better as you cannot actually get control of an email account with the app specific password. You cannot login to the web interface with the app specific password. So you can view all my emails with an app specific password but never steal my account.

sorry if I have moved this thread a bit as I learned how 2 factor authentication actually worked.

I see ehlo's valid points with a better understanding now.

If set up correctly it should stop anyone from stealing your account.

Personally I would like to have an option to just leave it as it was before the 25th....
