Who's Online function disabled

I have disabled the "Who's Online" function (the function that let you see what other users are doing at a particular time) because it puts a MASSIVE load on the server, quite out of proportion with its very limited utility.

Sure, it's "fun" but it doesn't provide any vital information, and I prefer to keep the server running at top speed

To forestall the probably otherwise inevitable question: no, this will not be turned back on again in future - this is a permanent change. On a system-wide level, the speed gains are just amazing now that it's not running!

You know, after 18 months on the forum I never used that function once. I didn't even realise it was there.

Its probably my fault its been banned. I use it all the time. I find it really useful - especially if theres a thread I really need answered. However of course I respect Edwins decision and would much rather have a reliable and fast server

Don't worry, as best I could tell from my server stats, there were quite a lot of people who liked the option of watching other people

Switching it off has really knocked the load averages down by a massive amount. We're up to 167 simulateous users and the server's not even breaking a sweat.

The logon page is still showing who's online.... is that simply out of date now?

I think that is still functional. I believe Edwin is referring to the who's on line page available form the drop down box on the top right of the User CP screen.

I dont use it that much. I just use it if I posted a thread and I want to see if people are reading it.

I have used it in the past but occassionally. Too bad it's gone; I've found it useful when I did actually need it.

I am very sorry this function is gone. I used it frequently.

No Signature, no Advanced Search, no "Who's Online", what will come next?

I'm another of those who never used it, in fact I'm not sure I ever realised it existed. I guess I'm one of those boring people who really don't care who else is online or what they're doing!

Heh I loved the fact that I could track users, and see that some of them spent near-eternity reading a topic, moving on to another, quickly skim that, etc. If I'd been a profiler I could have written books about you all by now :P
