Fastmail & Outlook 2011 Mac
Ive recently purchased Microsoft Office 2011 for my mac and was wondering if anyone knew the correct settings to set up IMAP.
I followed the settings for Outlook 2010 but im left with my inbox as 'INBOX' then the rest of my folders as subfolders. I was hoping someone could help so that i have the straightforward hierarchy as in Apple Mail. Thanks |

Usually what is needed to get the folders promoted to the top level is setting the Root Folder Path to "INBOX", or in some cases "INBOX." (with a period at the end) in the email client. See this help screen.
If that doesn't work, you can try changing the IMAP port to the alternate namespace port (992 for secure SSL) and leave the Root Folder Path empty. See this help screen. Bill |

I have also recently purchased Office 2011 for Mac, but have not configured Outlook, choosing at this stage to continue with Mail app. I will try to find some time to test Outlook and will post anything I learn.

So,
I have connected Outlook for Mac 2011 (version 14.0.1) running on a MBP under OS X version 10.6.5 to Fastmail. The only tricky piece was do not select "Always use secure password" option under "Incoming server". (When I do select this, I get the error message "Authentication failed because Outlook doesn't support any of the available authentication methods.") I am using SSL. I did choose "Override default port" option under "Outgoing server" and set the port to 465, but the default port of 25 also seemed to work. My email folder structure appears under Fastmail (the name I chose) under Inbox. If I select "Override default port" under "Incoming server" and set the port to 992, my email folder structure appears under (only) Fastmail, not under Inbox. Thus, as BIll suggested, using the alternate namespace port is necessary to achieve what you seem to desire. (I did not specify "IMAP Root Folder" under either approach.) Denis. |
