Lightbulb What day is Shrove Tuesday this year?

A search has turned up various sites claiming that "Mardi Gras", "Pancake Day" or "International Pancake Day" is on March 4th; but I suspect this date because none of these sites call the day by its technically-correct name (Shrove Tuesday), and because the date given is only four days short of the very latest it can be.  To say nothing of the site which claims that "Pancake Day" is on Saturday, November 2 (wrong day of week and wrong time of year)...

Even more annoying, I've found plenty of sites telling me what Shrove Tuesday is (which, apart from the custom of shriving, I already knew), but not when it is this year, which is what I'm trying to find out...

Does anyone know?

The date of Shrove Tuesday varies
This year Shrove Tuesday is on March 4, 2003.

Shrove Tuesday, the day before the season of Lent begins in the Western Christian liturgical calendar. The actual date varies from year to year since it depends on the date of Easter.

I found this answer at askjeeves - www.ask.com its great for question type searches. check it out! just type in "what date is shrove tuesday" and you'll get a plenty of webpages to checkout.

I found Ash Wednesday as march 5th this year on the calendar from my local Catholic church. So, yes, March 4th should be Shrove Tuesday. Often it is called Fat Tuesday, the last day to "pig out" before giving up something for Lent, which begins on Ash Wed. Does anyone know what "shrove" means?

And maybe this thread should end here, as it's getting dangerously close to a discussion of religion, which is forbidden here (I think because of the danger of provoking a flame war)...

1) A (printed) newsletter I receive claimed that Lent begins this year on February 10th — which I knew must be wrong as that's a Monday and Lent always begins on a Wednesday.

2) I like pancakes.

Do you have an International House of Pancakes (IHOP) in your neck of the woods? They make great pancakes. I especially like their German lemon butter crepes. Tasty!

The above page has since moved; the URL is now http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religi...etuesday.shtml.  This year, Shrove Tuesday is February 24 (courtesy of an Ask Jeeves search, as suggested in this thread) — get those pancake fixings in!

Incidentally, I wonder what's become of lizzymcfizzy?  Presumably she got all her problems solved and is now using FM without any further help; I stick around here to help others, and because of the great community!

Anyone else celebrate Shrove Tuesday in the traditional way?  I did (I used granulated aspartame-based sweetener instead of sugar, and with the lemon juice it still tasted great)...

Pancake Day 2006 is February 28th.

Remember, if you're going the sugar-free route (as I probably will), to use an aspartame-based sweetener, not a stevia-based one...

robert@fm's post has lots of interesting info which seems to be paradoxical:
1) "Mardi Gras", "Pancake Day" or "International Pancake Day" is technically supposed to be called Shrove Tuesday.
2) Pancake day might be Nvo 2 or Mar 4.

Perhaps this site can add some light on the subject.

Not really paradoxical:

1) Shrove Tuesday (aka Mardi Gras (literally "Fat Tuesday"), at least in Latin America) is what's called "Pancake Day" in the UK, and is always 47 days before Easter; it was thus March 4 in 2003, and is February 20 this year.  Next year it will be February 5.

2) Theoretically, there's nothing to stop anyone declaring any day they like as "Pancake Day", just as the US celebrates "Mother's Day" on a date other than Mothering Sunday, which is 21 days before Easter.  Because of the way UK bank holidays work, some people in the UK still refer to the last Monday in May as "Whitsun", although it seldom actually is (Whit Monday is the 50th day after Easter, which this year coincidentally happens to be the 28th of May; but it usually doesn't work out that way).
