permanently deleting posts on multiple computers

This is an imap/thunderbird question .How do i ensure that a post deleted on one computer is automatically deleted on another one ?
Deleted loads of posts on my desktop only to see them all present in my laptop's thunderbird.

It is possible to set up Thunderbird to keep a 'local copy', in addition to the files in the IMAP folder. Messages deleted from an IMAP folder should disappear from view (when accessed by any other machine) after (and only after) that machine has been online and logged in to the account in question.

At that point the folders (in the other machine) should be updated, but you will need to 'synchronize' all your folders first (I think you can set this up to happen automatically) .

edit: after further checking, it looks like you can do this by going to the 'Tools' menu and then clicking 'account settings' and then clicking on 'synchronization and storage' (my version of Thunderbird is not the latest)

Yes, I think that TB defaults to keeping offline copies when creating the account - you have to change that setting.
