Fastmail moving to new datacenters - but where exactly?

Hi,

As you can see at https://fastmailstatus.com/ Fastmail is moving to new data-centers but they do not talk about somewhere else?!

In earlier Time we?ve seen many Infos from their site concerning such big changes. But now - no Blog entry or something else?

Anybody with more details?

In terms of communication they have indeed deteriorated considerably.

Why the location is so important?

It seems I did not make my question very clear...

Surely this is an important factor for Fastmail. But why should users care whether the data centre is in that American city or another?

Looks like they are getting ready to sell the business.

We are not ordinary users here, Janusz and you know that.

In the early days it was of some importance to them that the data center be located in Manhattan, since that was the place with best internet connectivity. Fastmail was located in Melbourne, Australia, and they managed their hardware by proxy (that is, data center employees would maintain their hardware for them).
Nowadays the internet grew so much that probably connectivity in Philadelphia is just as good for email purposes, and on the other hand Fastmail has its own employees in Philadelphia, so that may be a consideration.

I guess they didn't lay off all their staff in Philadelphia. https://www.emaildiscussions.com/sho...t=philadelphia

May be of moderate importance. Laws about whether the government can spy on data flows vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. There's also natural disaster risks that vary by region. (I remember when Hurricane Sandy hit NYC and NYI and FM both posted to their blogs with frequent updates, like abt special backup generator fuel deliveries, etc.) Also, DDOS attacks targeting an upstream victim can flow downstream, so which networking backbone the host uses may matter.

But now the same situation! All data at one region?! Why not splitting it into two regions?

Traditinaly Fastmail used to have a backup or secondary site somewhere else: on a different continent (e.g. Iceland) or a separate electric network (e.g. Texas). It seems that now they have a secondary site in Seattle , though it's not clear if this info is up to date, as it doesn't reflect the move from New Jersey to Philadelphia.

For more background, their blog has historically provided information on server relocations, but this doesn't seem to be the case for the current move. It’s curious that this time around there’s no blog entry or any detailed announcement beyond what's visible on their status page. Fastmail’s shift to new data centers is significant, yet their usual transparency seems absent.

It’s possible that they’re focused more on the technical aspects of the migration rather than public communication, or perhaps there’s a delay in releasing those updates. This move could also be tied to infrastructure upgrades aimed at data enrichment—improving their ability to manage and enhance user data for more efficient and secure email services.

There are two DCs, one in Philadelphia and one in St. Louis.
