Missing "Delayed Mail (still being retried)" bounce DSNs
Since I started using FM is 2006, I have received Fastmail Subject: "Delayed Mail (still being retried)" soft-bounce DSN messages as appropriate.
But none since 2023-12-14 - despite in 2024 many delays (some over over 12hrs) of messages from FM Send a copy... command (rule or manual) to Gmail. Are other users still receiving them? Past DSNs said e.g. https://i.imgur.com/zDR2LMM.png - Your message could not be delivered for more than 1 hour(s). - It will be retried until it is 1 day(s) old. - - For further assistance, please read our help center article about message bounces - - https://www.fastmail.help/hc/en-us/a...es-bounce-back That article (currently) says: - If you send an email that was not successfully delivered to the recipient, you will - receive a message letting you know that the message has bounced. - ... - If the code starts with 4 (also referred to as a 4xx code), this means that the message - has been soft bounced. A soft bounce occurs if the mail system believes that the - issue causing the bounce may be temporary, and decides to continue making - attempts to deliver the message for a short amount of time (often 1 day or so). but some 2024 4xx DSNs here have instead Subject: "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" and conspicuously omit the retry promise https://i.imgur.com/EMcCIjw.png. Indeed in a queried instance, Support confirmed that no retry took place. Despite that, I would not like to have to conclude that FM has ceased the "Delayed Mail (still being retried)" soft-bounce DSNs without confirmation. Thanks. I'm still getting them. Although I filter them into trash cos I don't see the point of them. You want to know if an e-mail has not been able to be delivered; but how is it useful to be told that it might be delivered in a bit.. but on the other hand it might not be?

Thanks.
Very useful to me, because it tells me there is no need to resend. Last edited by chrisjj : 5 Nov 2024 at 10:01 AM. |

Sometimes you would want to use anther means of communication if you know the message was still not delivered. Most people expect email to be delivered within at most a few minutes after it was sent. So if it is not delivered after about an hour a user should be notified that the delivery is delayed. |

Does anyone here have an over-quota mailbox to which I may send a test message? Thanks.
