Getting rid of "lined out" messages
Using IMAP in Netscape 4.7x, I moved quite a few messages from one of my mailboxes to a local folder. I do this often. However, this time they didn't get deleted from the FM box, but in the web interface show up with lines through them.
I also have a few in another FM box which I know I moved into other boxes, but they also show up in the original box but lined through. Do these "lined out" messages need to be manually deleted, or is there another method? (I'm sure this has been dealt with before, or is in the Help somewhere, but I didn't find it.) Thanks very much-- --Ann jr. |

These are messages marked for deletion. To actually delete them using the web interface, go to the folder with the striked out messages and select "Purge deleted" from the Action menu. There's no need to select the messages individually.

In Netscape go to Edit > Preferences > Mail & Newsgroups > Mail Servers. Click on the account & click the Edit button. There should be something in one of the tabs about Cleaning up, Expunging or Purging folders on Exit. If there is then you can set it so that these messages are deleted when you exit Netscape. I am not sure of the exact layout this as I have my 4.7 set up as POP. You will just have to look and see and try it.

In my experience, what everybody else has said is right, but when I move a message from my Inbox to another folder, the web interface will show the message as marked for deletion (ie "line through") at first, but after a while they will automatically disappear. This happens because FM has no "move" function, but it translates to "copy to target folder and delete from original folder." Now, I should point out that I have never tried moving an FM message into my local folders, but only in other folders of FM. So when you move it to a local folder, the only action performed may well be "delete," i.e. mark for deletion.

Thank you all. I have gotten rid of the "lined out" messages using "Purge deleted". I have also looked at the settings for Netscape 4.7x and seen the "Clean up (Expunge) Inbox on Exit" option. However, usually the messages that I move from FM folders to local folders seem to get purged automatically after some time, so I guess I won't fix something that isn't usually broken!
Just for kicks, I'm going to move some more messages from FM to local, and see what happens and how long it takes. Thanks again-- --Ann jr. |
