Jeff, that certainly makes a radivcal difference. But it is 'one extreme to the other' if you know what I mean.
I have also downloaded Avant which I am using to write this post. I have to say that my first impressions are that I really like this option, so I think that I will invest my time at least for the next couple of weeks in familiarising myself with it. Thanks for putting me right though. Larry |

AFAIK it's th tabbed browser line that takes up the extra room. It's probably worth having a fiddle with the toolbar and button customisation to see if you can save some space. I've only just installed Avant myself so I'm not sure of all its features but my initial impressions are positive.

Hi Gerry. After reading your post, I had another look at Avant Browser. I had an older version which had been a bit buggy on my computer. I grabbed the new one and it's quite nice. I do like good password management for multiple users, which is one thing I really like about Mozilla/Firebird, but the the RoboForm plugin takes care of that. It also lets you pop-up windows, like the poll window on fastmail, if I want while still blocking unwanted pop-ups, which I'm not sure it did in earlier versions. I've tried out so many I'm not sure, but that's another thing that I like about Mozilla/Firebird that most of the IE shells didn't do very well.
I also didn't have luck importing bookmarks. Even downloaded a little utility that's supposed to help, but no luck. That seems to be a weak point with a lot of browsers. Not a huge thing to me, because I only recently started storing bookmarks on the home computer, but I can see where it's a problem for some. Anyway, Avant seems to have taken the lead when it comes to IE shells and I'm enjoying it. I still really like Firebird, so I'll probably go back and forth, but it's a very nice option to have. |

Have you tried Bookmark Priest (for the import/export of bookmarks). I found it excellent and it's only 154kb.
<edit>It's a bit hard to find now as the download link on the homepage is invalid but i've managed to find it here</edit> Last edited by Adrian Bell : 23 Jun 2003 at 03:47 AM. |

While we're on the subject has anybody got any thoughts on the relative merits of Avant, MYIE2, Crazybrowser and their ilk?
Regards, Jeff |

I haven't looked at Crazybrowser in about a year, I think. At that time MyIE seemed best to me. Avant is now edging past it, IMHO, but just barely. They're both good. Crazybrowser didn't seem on a par with them, but it could have had a bunch of new versions by now for all I know.

I'm glad to see a fair smattering of personal favourites amongst the submissions so far. Here's my top of the pops, in no particular order...
BootitNG - partition, resize, move, copy, backup, multi-boot, - no disk should be without it! Second Copy 2000 - the simplest and best automated backup manager around Password Corral - superb, simple, secure, password manager Powerdesk - what Windows Explorer should have been Notetab - what Notepad never even dreamed of being Irfanview - simply the best free image viewer HTML Beauty - outstanding free HTML editor Opera - love the speed and the tabbed windows and the configurability Paint Shop Pro - very powerful and reasonably priced image editor Plus honourable mentions for AVG, the Thunderbird mail client for those who don't mind living a little dangerously, and Total Commander for lovers of old-style interfaces and top class utility software. Enjoy... AB |
