I just got this error (a little before 11am EDT):
FastMail- An error has occured Unfortunately an unexpected and fatal error occured while trying to retrieve the requested page. We have logged this error and will try and fix the problem as soon as possible. If you are really curious to know, the error was : Timed out MailApp::Common 561 at /home/mod_perl/hm/Apache/Event.pm line 69. For the moment please click the 'Back' button on your browser and try again. If that doesn't work, please go to fastmail.fm and login again. At the same time, IMAP was down. It came back shortly thereafter, although the web interface is still down. The admin.fastem.com page doesn't report any trouble at all. |

Still a problem.
Get the following from the URL. FastMail mail service is down Note: If this page seems out of date, click "Refresh" on your browser. Some systems seem to cache this page long after the system is up and running again. The reason the service is down is: Automated restart to fix non-responding service. The service was taken down at: Mon Apr 22 10:04:55 2002 (this is in the CST timezone, see your timezone) The estimated down time is: 5 minute(s) We try and keep these down times as few and far between as possible, but please be patient. See our forum for status updates. Thanks for using FastMail FastMail webmaster |

Anybody know if this is still the same evil IMAP bug that they're working on fixing?

Looks like the system was down for 5 minutes. I'll try and work out tomorrow what happened (it's 1:20AM right now). At least our automated restarter worked properly this time, as well as our SMS notification service.

SMTP seemed to be rejecting my outgoing messages (from Outlook Express) for a few minutes there, but they finally went through... the first few times I pressed send/receive I got a message that the SMTP server was rejecting my message, but then magically they went through... weird...

Ok, the outage last night was due to a load problem, not a socket or server lockup one.
Basically it seems to have been caused by a Monday morning rush of people going to check and download their email at around 10AM CST time, I guess that's 8AM west coast time. That's good in that the system definitely appears more stable with the new kernel, but bad in that clearly we're reaching some load limits. As we've mentioned, we've got the 2 new servers, and hope that in the next week or two we can distribute the load and avoid any problems like this in the future. Rob |
