My reflection wraps and pulls me under
healing waters to be bathed in Brena

(from A PERFECT CIRCLE - "Brena")

I like this especially because of the opening line: "my reflection". I think it goes much deeper than any other phrase to point at your partner. "Darling" or "baby" just express affection, but saying someone is your 'reflection' is much deeper: it says that you really love this person but that you also fully know why: because you both want and dream the same things and understand each other at a higher level, because you see yourself and your character reflecting in your partner.

*bump*

It would be a shame if this thread were lost...

I remember a reggae song I heard over 30 years ago, called Small Axe, which had a recurring lyric something like:

Quote:
If you're a big tree
I've got a small axe
Ready to cut you down
To cut you down
A simple but haunting song; it seems to me to have a strong anti-racist message (big tree == bigotry), especially since another bit says "Whosoever diggeth the pit shall fall in".

I always liked the lyrics in that 80s song "Big Country" from the Scottish band of the same name:
Quote:
So take that look out of here, it doesn't fit you
Because it's happened doesn't mean you've been discarded
Pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming
Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted
I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered
But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered.

On the subject of bigotry, I always liked the song "Everyday People" by Sly and the Family Stone:
Quote:
Sometimes I'm right and I can be wrong
My own beliefs are in my song
The butcher, the banker, the drummer and then
Makes no difference what group I'm in
I am everyday people...

There is a blue one who can't accept the green one
For living with a fat one trying to be a skinny one
And different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on...
...we got to live together

I am no better and neither are you
We are the same whatever we do
You love me you hate me you know me and then
You can't figure out the bag l'm in
I am everyday people, yeah yeah

There is a long hair that doesn't like the short hair
For bein' such a rich one that will not help the poor one
And different strokes for different folks...

There is a yellow one that won't accept the black one
That won't accept the red one that won't accept the white one
And different strokes for different folks...

I am everyday people.

Bump!

If It Doesn't Come Naturally, Leave It - Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat

Nothing that's forced can ever be right
If it doesn't come naturally, leave it
That's what she said as she turned out the light
And we bent our backs as slaves of the night
Then she lowered her guard and showed me the scars
She got from trying to fight
Saying oh, you'd better believe it.

Too Old by Andromeda (a largely-forgotten proto-prog band from 1967/8, the precursor to Atomic Rooster):

It's time to think about the time when you grow old
And to think about the times that you've been told
Of what to do when years they seem to hurry by
Got to face the facts, it does no good to lie
The years pass on
And before long
There's nothing left for you to do, the time has gone

You've got to think of all the things you planned to do
And of all the places you were going to
You've had your chance and now it's too late, the days are past
You should have (made?*) it while you had the chance
Just live today
Not years away
And take no notice what the people [undecipherable] say.

(*I couldn't quite hear what this word is; I've typed my best guess.)

I found this quite a haunting song when I was 15; even more so 40 years on.

You would have to go some way . . .

. . . to beat the weird and wonderful lyrics of Jefferson Airplane/Starship.

One of my favorites is "Connection" by Jefferson Starship:

A hundred thousand years ago
People livin’ in bone white cities
Comin’ and goin’ on streets of silver
Talkin’ future history

Then something very strong went wrong
And suddenly

People gathered round the hunting fires
(huddled in caves like animal, not human)
Round the warmth of the late night fire
Cities gone, memories fading
Spend their lives round the late night fire
Give their souls to the hunting fire
Seeking each other’s company
Tryin’ to remember ancient history

They lost connection
They lost contact
They need to touch you
Reach out across the ages and touch you

Meanwhile somewhere in the 20th century
A young girl named phoebe caulfield
Plops herself down on the sofa
Pops open a soda and watches you

She likes to watch murderer talk
She likes to see them on my tv
She likes to watch them how they walk
She likes to hear what they say

It’s like a car crash
Bloody fascination

You wonder how they get their shoes tied
Sit and stare at the horror there
She knows you watch them too
Stranglers, murderers, snipers, terrorists
Political assassins, crazy ones, cool ones
All them looking for

Connection
They lost contact
They lost direction
They need sexual, mystical
Magical, uninterrupted, peter gabriel like
Contact

Here I am
Again inside
This darkness
All is black
I cannot see your future
Give me light
I want to see your eyes
Just a little light
Inside your future

A small connection
Connection
Ah!!!!

I’d like to see jesus and mohammad
On the road to damascus
What did you think they would say
Would they fight with knives clenched in their teeth
Like jews and arabs today
Or would they walk and speak
Like philosophers and thinkers
Amused at each other’s insights
Relishing the brain waves there
Round the warmth of the hunting fire
Eager for, hungry for
They got to have
You know they love

Connection
Contact
Communion
And let our two great religions
Cease their senseless struggle
It only hurts the children
Connection
Connection

will need to add in a few posts in a row to prevent to be auto-logged-out...

"I was at a funeral the day I realised I wanted to spend my life with you
Sitting down at the steps at the old post office
The flags were flying at half mast
And I was thinking about how everyone is dying
And maybe it's time to live...

...

Laying in bed at night I was thinking and listening to all the dogs, and the sirens, and the shots
and how a carefull man tries to dodge the bullets, while a happy man takes a walk
Maybe it's time to live"

(Eels - PS You Rock My World)

"If I show you the truth, will you show me the beauty?
If I show you the pain, will you show me the purity?
If I show you the scars, will you show me yours?
It's the same all over... Same all over...
You were never there..."
(The God Machine - Purity)

"Talk to yourself, listen because no one else will
Talk to your imaginary friends that only you can see
Stare, stare into your dream machine"
(The God Machine - Dream Machine)

"I wish I was a flower, so I could fly away and come back again
Again and again
Or will I always be by myself, staring at the sky?
Or will I learn to fly?"
(The God Machine - The Flower Song)

"Why is your sky always so much more beautiful than mine?
Well you look at your sky and say: look how beautiful
Well, I look at these walls, and scream: LET ME OUT!"
(The God Machine - Out)

"I turn off the lights but leave the television talking, oh tonight I don't wanna be alone
I turn off the lights but I'm afraid of the dark, I see you everywhere, I see you everywhere
But death comes so slow, when you're waiting to be taken
Death comes so slow, when it's all you want, and it takes the ones that don't"
(Sophia - So Slow)

"I take a deep breath and let the warm air fill my lungs
And I decided that today I'm gonna be a better person
No it's never too late to change"
(Sophia - Portugal)

"And I fell asleep into a dream and thought that it was real
And I knew that it was allright, knew that he was allright
Fell asleep into a dream and thought that it was real
Knew that it was allright, knew that he was allright
But all of seven knew we would never see him again
...
And I thought I heard you speaking as I fell into a dream
I know that it was allright, knew that he was allright"
(The Connells - Seven)

"So surprised... I fought windmills
So surprised... I saw angels, I found my place in this
So surprised... I had visions
So surprised... You were in them, I found my place in this world
It's you I swear, it's you I swear
I delight in my despair"
(The Connells - Scotty's Lament)

"It wasn't you, it wasn't me, it wasn't anything
It was a day so long awake, and a chance to be as me
I let the wind run through my hands before I turn to walk away
In distant days I long to sense it all so clear

And fighting time so hard I pray to let this moment last forever
And will the world stay standing still at least for me?
Through my eyes stare into me, I bear/bare my heart for all to see
With my face turned to the sun, there am I standing still"
(VNV Nation - Standing)

"I know it's hard to tell how mixed up you feel
Hoping what you need is behind every door
Each time you get hurt, I don't want you to change
Because everyone has hopes, you're human after all
The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else
Feeling as though you never belong
This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy
I truly understand. Please, don't cry now

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate;
For all the hurt that you feel,
The world is just illusion, trying to change you

...
But what I do know, is to us the world is different
As we are to the world but I guess you would know that"
(VNV Nation - Illusion)

"How long have you been free in this world of ice and greed?
Is it black? Or is it white? Let's find another compromise
And our future's standing still, we're dancing in the spotlights
Where's the leader who leads me? I'm still waiting... leaving home

And God is on your side, dividing sparrows from the nightingales
Watching all the time, dividing water from the burning fire ... inside

...

Move in circles, walk in lines, no human being in sight
Calm the winds and calm the seas, find another kind of peace
Who fights this holy civil war? A million men in uniforms
Wo ist der Führer der mich führt, ich warte immer noch...

And God is on your side, dividing soldiers from the fishermen
Watching all the time, dividing washes from the ferry boats"
(Wolfsheim - Sparrows and the Nightingales)

PS: translating this to English would take all poetic aspects away, but here goes:

"I remember what you like, I create you a new magical world
in which no rain will fall and only your truth counts
I create you mountains and lakes, here you should only see the world through my eyes
And don't forget: have no fear, you can calmly go with me
In a great All, only for yourself, here you can finally be yourself
Under neon sunshine, I will realise all your dreams
But you don't see me"

"Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone

Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone

Subdivisions -
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
Subdivisions -
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth"
(Rush - Subdivisions)

"Living on a lighted stage approaches the unreal, for those who think and feel
In touch with some reality beyond the guilded cage
That's the least unlikely role, ill-equipped to act with insufficient tact
One must pull up barriers to keep oneself intact

Living in the limelight, the universal dream for those who wish to seem
Those who wish to be must put aside the alienation, get on with the fascination
The real relation, the underlying theme"
(Rush - Limelight)

"My reflection wraps and pulls me into healing waters
to be bathed in Breña
Guides me into places I've never been
Heal me, heal me, my dear Breña
So vulnerable, .... but it's allright"
(A Perfect Circle - Breña)

"So if you're mad, get mad! Don't hold it all inside, come on and talk to me now
But hey, what you got to hide?
I get angry too... but I'm a lot like you
You're standing on the crossroads and you don't know which path to choose
Let me come along, cause even if you're wrong
I'll stand by you, I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you"
(The Pretenders - I'll Stand By You)

"With the light in our eyes it's hard to see
Holding on and on to what we believe
With the light in our eyes it's hard to see
I'm not touched but I'm aching to be"
(Heather Nova - Walk this World)

"All at sea again
Now my hurricanes have brought down this ocean rain
to bathe me again
My ship's asail, can you hear its tender frame
screaming from beneath the waves?
Screaming from beneath the waves?
All hands on deck at dawn
Sailing to sadder shores
Your port in my heavy storm harbours the blackest thoughts"
(Echo & The Bunnymen - Ocean rain)

"Leave me go, Jesus, I love you, yeah I love you
Just let me go
I even love the devil, for yes he did me harm by keep me any longer
Cause I'm really tired, I wanna go to sleep and wake up happy
Cause I'm really tired, I wanna go to sleep...
Wake up happy..."
(Manic Street Preachers - William's Last Words)

"We see an ocean where once was land
And so they come to understand
This place where Man used to be born will be Man's water throne
All that was magical, beautiful, will be gone (these measures call for divine intervention)
All the achievements of Man, once will stand all alone (one that survives the final selection)
The sand in the hourglass moves so fast, slow the sand!
And nothing that mankind has strived for will be left in ocean land"
(Orphaned Land - Ocean Land)

"It soared from the arc, the dove within me
It sings forever, it flies free
Call to Thee, my torch in darkness
Thou art born
Ornaments of gold shine so
But you are the way, you are the light
Dwell in this, my shelter, and Thy birth do I foresee"
(Orphaned Land - Sapari)

"I sing it one more time for you, then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right in all I've done
And I can barely look at you, cause every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere, away from here

Light up, light up, as if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice, I'll be right beside you dear
Louder, louder, and we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak, I understand how you can't raise your voice to say"
(Snow Patrol - Run)
