On The Fly "From" addressing with client SW?

Using the web interface I can generate any From address I like by by appending (e.g.) #someone@somewhere.org to the To address. Presumably the interpretation is done by the front end? If it were done by the back end (the messagingengine SMTP server) then I could use the same technique with any mail client. Has this ever been considered, or is the SMTP server off limits for feature requests?
