Trouble setting up FM with Outlook 365

I'm trying to set up my FM account with Outlook 365 on Windows 10 using the instructions here.

The process mostly proceeds as described, but not quite.
  1. Outlook prompts for my email address. I enter my FM address
  2. I then click Advanced Options and select "Let me set up my account manually"
  3. I click Connect, and Outlook whirs away for a while and then prompts for my password (Note: This is NOT what the directions say...the directions say I should be taken to a page where I enter the server info). I enter my newly minted for the occasion app-specific password.
  4. After whirring away for a few minutes, I get a page that says that there is a problem setting up my account

Any ideas out there for how to resolve this?

Odd. Outlook 365 seems to be ignoring your selection to set up the account manually.

Aside from that, did you set up an app password, or try to use the main account password (which will not work).

Yes, I did set up a new app-specific password, right before trying to set up Outlook 365. I even created a 2nd new app-specific password, just in case somehow something went awry with the 1st one.

So, further digging & experimentation turns up this...

1. I was trying to set up Fastmail on a Windows 10 virtual machine via VMWare Fusion. This is what is not working.

2. If I use Outlook for Mac, I have no trouble setting up Fastmail and connecting via IMAP.

Don't know what to make of this. I definitely have network access because I surf using a browser, connect to Windows Update, etc.

Could there be an issue, either on the host or virtual machine, with firewall blocking of IMAP or SMTP?

Well, late last night I installed Thunderbird on the VM, and I had no trouble setting TB up with FM using exactly the same credentials as failed with Outlook.

So, to conclude:
  • Outlook 365 fails to set up an FM account on a VM
  • Outlook 365 successfully sets up FM on the Mac
  • Thunderbird successfully sets up FM on the VM

Given all this, I’m inclined to think the issue is with Outlook for Windows, not the VM.

My next (and probably last) test will be trying to set up FM on my wife’s Windows 10 machine (native, not VM).

If setting up FM on my wife’s machine works, I have absolutely no idea what conclusion to draw!

Setting up FM in Outlook 365 on my wife's (physical) PC also failed.

Seems to be an issue with Outlook and FM.

Were you able to get Outlook 365 to accept the instruction to allow you to set up manually?

If not, as I recall, there is a setting that suppresses testing the connection after setting it up, which then allows you to go in and edit it. I hope my memory is not playing tricks with me on this.

Works OK for me on Windows 10.

Try this procedure:
  1. Open Outlook
  2. Click "File" at the top left
  3. Click the small button near the top which says "+ Add Account"
  4. A popup dialogue box should open
  5. Enter your FM login email address
  6. Click the hyperlink "Advanced options"
  7. Click the checkbox "Let me set up my account manually"
  8. Click the big blue "Connect" bar
  9. A new dialogue box opens - offering email account types..."
  10. Choose IMAP
  11. The server settings dialogue box will open
  12. Enter the FM server settings as per FM instructions
  13. Click "Next"
  14. complete the password entries etc

Once the account is created go back the File and Account Settings for the new account and edit the Reply to address to whatever alias you want to use.
Otherwise your FM login email will be used & exposed.

That is EXACTLY the procedure I used! But it failed on two different Windows 10 machines. Weird!

Note: Do not enable secure password authentication (SPA). It is not needed when you use SSL/TLS encryption and it will not work.

So, you tried port 587 and it worked? I tried it with the same result as before (i.e., failure).
