Labels and keyboard shortcuts

Recently, I have trouble assigning lables by keyboard. Here is what I do:

When reading a message I press “l” (lower-case L) which brings up the label list.

Then I begin typing the label name and press return as soon as my label shows up.

Now this checks the checkbox of my label, but the label list stays on the screen. How do I exit the label dialog? Escape will exit, but will also undo my labeling. Return will toggle the checkbox.

I’m quite sure that in an earlier version pressing return did assign (or remove) the chosen label and immediately exit the dialog? 🤔

Any advice for that?
