Wink Runbox ISP down? You aren't multi-homed?

Sorry, I just have to take a "jab"!

>>>From Press release about Dell<<<<<<<<
At the same time we are substantially strenghtening our partnership with our ISP Comnet and upgrading our ISP agreement.

Comnet is guaranteeing an uptime on the network of 99,9%.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Looks like the 99.9% is "shot-to-hell"!!!

You guys don't have multiple circuits from different vendors and or ISP's?

OUCH!

What good is 10,000 Dell storage systems if your single point of failure is a single DS3/OC-3 from your ISP.

Good luck in fixing your problems.

From "World According To Garp" ... Airplane crashes into the house they are looking to buy. Garp says "We'll take it! What are the chances of another plane crashing into it!".

From Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life" ... Always look on the bright side of life!

This is the 0.1% downtime. So we'll have 100% uptime the rest of the year!

A very quick reading of my logs show that the network was down approx. 18 minutes. Do the math, and you'll see that for one month that is 0.04% of a 31-day long month (and for all I know the 99.9% are measured quarterly).

Runbox is hosted in their ISPs colo facilities, with ethernet cables just a few metres long plugged directly into their backbone. The ISP itself is of course multihomed - a quick check in the RIPE database reveals that AS 2116 has 63 peering partners.

What happened here was that the ISP messed up the configuration on their border routers, rendering their networks unreachable. Of course, Runbox could have re-routed their own networks through another ISP if they were multihomed themselves and ran their own border routers, but think about it for a second: Do you think the Runbox staff, who concern themselves primarily with email, would have the expertise to run their own AS in an even better way than their ISP who do exactly that for a living?
