I think that if the tradition is taken up in Australia (unlikely, I know, since February there is in summer), they should use quolls instead of groundhogs. Although quolls are marsupials, they're enough like rats (spotted ones) to pass muster. And they're very cute (even cuddly), which is the main thing.
