Gmail sign up problem

Hello to everyone, I have tried to register following these steps http://scalar.usc.edu/works/account/gmail/sign-up but they ask me to send them the phone number in a mandatory way to register the account and would like to know if there is any way to avoid it.

That looks like a college-managed Google account. I would just ask your college IT folks or ask around the dorms. You probably can just use a friend's number if you want to, and then after you have created the account you can just delete the phone number from within account settings.
