Any of you participate in general online discussion forums?

EMD is a great example of a focused forum, but do any of you regularly use a general chat forum? I'm thinking of ones where there is actually a semblance of dialogue, like Craigslist, City Data, or Tides. I'm not sure I'd include Reddit as there doesn't seem to be real "chat."

The Off-Topic Lounge here was always anything but focused.
Other forums here still seem to be quite focused, though as members of the forums age we become a bit less focused.

Occasionally I post on Twitter. I used to participate more in some general forums, but today every thread becomes dominated by stupid and evil rightwing nutjobs. Not worth arguing with people who can't tie their shoelaces without tripping themselves up.

You seem to be confusing the EMD forum overall with the Off-Topic forum in particular.

No. I mean the number of posting on email matters versus the number of postings in the Off-Topic forum.

Agreed. The 'Off-Topic Lounge' does ruin the entire forum. For far too many years, absolute dross has been posted, and the main instigator has been given free rein over the years.

And by responding to these posts, it only encourages it.

Just because you can post any type of rubbish, it doesn't mean that you have to.

I post on Reddit. I think that's the only "general online discussion forum" I use if you don't consider Facebook (FB Groups are basically a collection of topic-specific forums, if you wish to consider it as such)

I miss the times when more theme-specific forums like this existed. A lot of forums have vanished and been replaced by Facebook Groups. Which is in my opinion just not the same, and most of those groups lack the community spirit of a forum.

I used to co-moderate forums in the past, such as a forum on Belgian (and international) football/soccer, which was a great experience. I also co-moderated a political forum, which was a less good experience and which I gave up after a while due to too many foul language and personal insults between members. But the football/soccer forum was very rewarding and a great community spirit existed there, despite all members being fans of different teams. I miss that kind of spirit on Facebook Groups, but I guess the evolution cannot be reversed and forums will become sparser and sparser.

Okay, but that's certainly not my idea of a general forum. It's a specific topic, like EMD.

It literally says right there: All sitcoms, all the time!

Like EMD, it's an extremely specialized website with one general forum.
