GMX Mail - Smtp Server.
Hello folks,
I'm new here and wonder if someone can help me with something please. I wanted to try out Gmx mail (the English and not German version here: http://www.gmx.co.uk/) as I worry a little about Gmail's snooping charter. I use The Bat email client and set up pop3/smtp servers accordingly and enabled the use of pop3 in my Gmx webmail options. Pop3 works fine but I just can't get the smtp server to work on either port 467/ssl or 587/start tls. They either don't connect or keep timing out. I tried Gmx support for help but they just emailed me a copy of exactly the set up instructions that are on the website so that was a waste of time. I'm using: mail.gmx.com as the smtp server. Is anyone one here using the service and if so can you tell me if the smtp server works for you please. At the moment I use the smtp server of my isp but it uses port 25 which is not secure so I'm not too happy about it, but they are going through the process of upgrading. When it happens though is unclear. Any help in getting Gmx to work would be appreciated. Thanks...Colin |

janusz,
I tried your way but it doesn't recognise my password for login authorisation so no luck there. chrisretusn Thanks for at least telling me it does work as now I have something to aim at. I just tried a portable version of Thunderbird and get the same results as I do with my Bat! client. It's all very odd. I've never heard of Claws-Mail but I'll take a look at it just to see how it sets things up server wise, this may give me a clue as to what I may be doing wrong (although to be honest I can't see how I can set up two clients incorrectly ) I'm very impressed with the Gmx pop3 server, it's lightning fast and the few test messages I've sent to my account get through straight away. No delays like with Yahoo or some others I tried. Thanks for the input people, I'll just have to troubleshoot step by step and hopefully get it sorted. Thanks...Colin |

I’m using a GMX account across three different platforms.
On all of them I have the SMTP server as: Name: mail.gmx.com Port: 587 Security: SSL or TLS/SSL (not STARTTLS) The one setting not mentioned so far is “Authentication” - use “Normal password”. Scroll down on this page, browse through the various client set-ups and you’ll see a mix of SMTP settings offered http://support.gmx.com/pop-imap/imap/index.html. |

I've found the problem, it's them!
They offer two domain names: gmx.co.uk & gmx.com. I chose an address with gmx.co.uk which doesn't work for me. I just took out the same address but using gmx.com and now it works fine! So they have a problem authenticating their smtp server with a .co.uk suffixed address. (The pop3 server is fine with both domains.) I'll now keep the one that works and cancel the original. I'll let them know what's going on so hopefully they'll fix it. Job done as far as I'm concerned, I'm no longer confused.com Thank you everybody. |

You’ll always connect to the SMTP server at gmx.com.
But you authenticate / use a user name in whatever GMX domain you’ve created the account. So a gmx.co.uk address will (and does) authenticate at mail.gmx.com. |
