MrMail shutting down free zimbra service

thats discouraging, I wonder why it is such a resource hog? I'm hoping when they release the new html5 version, it will be much more efficient... I haven't heard much about it though, just a concept screenshot about 8 months ago.

edit: I found a document here http://bobcares.com/blog/zimbra-your...e-mail-server/ the system requirements don't seem too bad. although this article is from 2008, so maybe it got more bloated over time.

edit 2: found a more recent article from 2012 http://www.zimbra.com/docs/os/latest...ion_Guide.html under "System Requirements for Zimbra Collaboration" it lists the same hardware as in the 2008 article.

I signed up over 15 years ago.
They sent me a CD and a password for my requested email address.
Never any problems.

well I contacted the new owner and asked to reconsider discontinuing the free plans. Originally, when it was run by people in the UK the free one only had 500mb of storage. Sometime during or after it got sold to the canadian person, it ballooned to 5gb. Personally for me 500mb was plenty, so I suggested that they just revert it back to how it was originally. I got a reply that it would cost too much to maintain. I have my doubts about this, but apparently they are going away for good after Jan 30th. The new owner also claimed to have already signed up 150 businesses, which I also doubt.
But whatever the case, those prices are waaaay too high, since I am actually only using about 250mb of space with that zimbra account.

I came across something called Zarafa, seems like an alternative to zimbra. Doesn't look exactly like zimbra though, but fairly close. Thats the hard part, trying to find a replacement for zimbra that looks as close to zimbra as possible.

No mention of the discount. The regular prices are really steep. Perhaps they do not want to retain current customers. Tidata.net SA is an ISP. Maybe they intend the service for their ISP customers.

Well I got an invoice today, that "special price" is 4.99 EUR (which is exactly the same as the normal price they list). It also listed a due date for the 21st of Janurary, so it seems that they are not even waiting until the 31st.

4.99 eur is the standard monthly price. The discount is 49.90 eur/year. (49.90 Euro is 58.83 USD). I haven't seen an invoice from them. My account shows 4.99/annually due in April.

They have a new blog entry describing the service and giving a name to the new CEO. It's nice to see that the mrmail brand is alive. The pricing is a bit too high for me though.

well thats strange b/c there was no mention of that 'discount' on the invoice. all it basically said was

i use the word discount lightly, because its way too high compared to when it was run by people in the UK. base price is twice as much in comparison.

anyway, i found a much cheaper zimbra solution. single user account for $12 a year from a company called mindcentric. http://mindcentric.com/zimbra-products/zimbra-cloud/ But I don't know anything about them or how reliable they are. I don't really need anything that isn't included in the basic package.

Based on the mail server (http://mail.zimbrahostedemail.com/) listed in their online support page, it looks like they are running an old version of Zimbra. Not sure if that's bad or not but FYI.

Polarismail Enhanced might be an option. It's very similar to Zimbra and is only $2/month.

Another system that has similar functionality as Zimbra is OX App Suite. Namecheap uses it for their Private Email (https://www.namecheap.com/hosting/email.aspx). Only $9.88 per year for 3GB mailbox. I have one mailbox with them. They had some stability issues a few months ago but it's been pretty stable the last couple months.

I'm not seeing what version they are running, but anything version 8x and above is ok. From 8.0 to 8.5 were just some minor changes, I could hardly tell anything was different. I might try out namecheap though, I like them as a company.
