attachment URL structure request
I have been trying to display some images in my email. I'm about three hours into this now and I'm dropping my problem here.
I have switched to Rich Text Format for the email. I first started trying to embed images from photobucket using the URL structure, then the img URL address and I tried HTTP image insert structure. None of these worked. I have copied the images into the file area of my fast mail account so I can directly attach the files to the email but I can't figure out how to insert them into the email. Can anyone provide a basic URL structure for attached files to embed them into the message? Thank you for any assistance. Suntydt |

Creating a link to an image file for use in an email
Welcome to the EMD Forums, Suntydt!
Here is what you need to do if you want to use images from your Fastmail file storage inserted into emails:

I think the question is how to embed the image in the message to be sent with the message, not just linked to a website, is that right, Suntydt?
I am not sure this is possible with the interface. You can have attachments, you can have images that are html linked, but I don't think you can embed those images to be sent as a part of the email - at least not from within the fastmail interface.... I may be wrong about that but I cannot find any information about embedding images in the fastmail wiki... Last edited by ChinaLamb : 5 Jan 2010 at 05:26 PM. |

I'm not sure when we were able to start doing that but I have embedded pictures in emails when practicing from the web. There's a choice to Insert/Edit Image button and when clicked you can paste in the url from your File Storage and it puts it right in the email.

I selected the insert image. Then pasted my link from my file location, then resized it and sent it. That sent the email with the image link (the picture showed up as a part of the email) but the image was still externally linked. If you are able to send images in emails embedded within the email, not just as images that appear in the email but externally linked, please let me know how to do this. /cl |

I just sent an embedded image to my Yahoo account. It showed in the FM compose window before sending and in the Yahoo email. I clicked on the button for "Insert/Edit Image" (not Insert/Edit Link) in the top row of buttons when in the Rich Text Compose screen then pasted in the link (the link to the right of the image file in the column that says "Website"). I didn't fill in any of the info choices.
That doesn't mean it wasn't a direct link in Yahoo but it didn't show up as an attachment that I could see??? Sherry |

When looking at the message as I receive it in fastmail, the size of the message is only a few k which is my first indication that the image is not embedded. The next indication is that fastmail says the image is "externally linked." Therefore, at least for me, I get image place-holders with externally linked images, not place-holders with internally embedded images... /cl |

Clarifying
Thanks everyone for the input. I haven't tried any of them yet but I will here shortly.
ChinaLamb saw what I was asking about. I have recieved emails with attached images that were also displayed in the email. So I was trying to duplicate those types of emails. To give you an idea of what I am doing I have a list of ten things to do to be a good humanitarium. I am trying to put pictures to it. One of them is Be Patient and Wise, here is the picture I chose for it: Patience And Wisdom |

Hmm, I wonder if it has to do with the browser and security settings your using? Like it may require JavaScript (not Java) to be enabled? Also, in IE8 I will get a pop-up window asking something about if I'll allow something from a non-secure site (I log in FM using the Secure button. If I say yes then the picture shows up and it I say no I just get the same place-holder as your getting.

Useful terminology for debugging
Can you look at the raw source of the sent email.
For the case where there is just a link you will find a URL. For the two cases where the image is also emailed you will find a message part that looks something like Code:
-------= Part_XXXXX -- Content-Tranfer-Encoding: base64 Content-Type: image/jpeg (or gif or png or whatever) Code:
Content-disposition: inline Code:
Content-disposition: attachment Note that for messages where the image appears to be embedded in an HTML message, you should have a Content-id: instead of a Content-disposition. |

I don't see either of the following in the "sent" message.
content-disposition. Content-id: instead of a Content-disposition. However, as a test, I renamed the file so Yahoo wouldn't be able to find it if it looks for it. The picture no longer showed in the Yahoo email so it does seem it is using a link to it instead of totally embedding it? (when renaming it back it did load the picture again) Sherry |

That you would get a message that secure and non secure content was being mixed on the same webpage proves that the images are offsite. The picture would be considered secure if it was embedded in the email, as it was only referenced, it is an external object, and you only got the placeholder.
Renaming a picture would have no impact whatsoever on an embedded image - this only seals the case. To answer Suntydt, it does not appear to be possible to embed an image in an email through the fastmail interface. You can reference them to show up in an html message, but you cannot embed them so that the picture data is sent along with the file. /cl |

Some suggestions
Though there isn't currently a way to embed images in the compose screen, and it might be a lot of work to fully implement this capability, perhaps it is possible to put a link near each attachment in the compose sceen (with a cid: url) that can be copied and pasted to an <img> tag in the email (or to an <a> tag). Also perhaps a checkbox for "inline" that changed the "Content-disposition" header to "inline". (and for the long term and ability to impsrt and resize an image attachment through ckeditor's "insert image" dialog).
