Wish the webmail interface were a bit smarter

Is there any possibility that the web interface could be upgraded to remember one's place in the message list? I have a new job that allows me to check e-mail much less often and I can have the better part of a page of 100 new when I go to check.
This wasn't bothering me when I could open the messages in a new window, but for some reason I lost that option when I replaced my iBook's hard drive and downloaded a newer version of Firefox.

I use Firefox. If I hold down the 'shift key' while clicking on a message it opens in a new window.
