Gmail could have free IMAP and still have ads?

Hey Gmail representant.

Even a 5 meg free Gmail imap would be a dream to have.

The ads could be sent down with every look regardless.

The goal for the advertizers is that I actually look at ads.

Now when I log in they will only know if I click on one.

The whole process of loading and using a webinterface to force people to look at ads. If there is better ways to have many look at them one could do a multi layered apporach.

Ok suppose the majority of users prefer to use webinterface cause the do a lot of internetcafe and are on the move. others like me want the conveniance of IMAP or pop even.

But what if 20% like me prefer to use imap and we could stand ads if they was chosen by us. Would not some advertixers want t oreach that big potential buyers too?

Would it not be more efective to use the greediness of people like me to engage them in evaluating the ads.

Like when the Televison folks have those feedback on users zippin and zapping to other channels phoned home to the advertize firm. That way they instantly know if I actually looked at it even if I use imap or pop.

The imap download could have a competition set up. users vote on best ad or most relevant ad for my preferences and teh "lottery" made us get a new 3 month to go for free and then we do a new such compettion and all particpating in it get another three month during the next 3 month to qualify for a new turn and those lucky to get the Jack pot got a whole year or two or three depending on the generosity of that advertizers preference.

Big company promise to give away three years free if oen read an ad every tie one down load.

Now I could log in read all mails days after day without looking ever at the ads. by making it worthful to actually read them then more of us would do it?

If it is fun for the user to actually look at the ads they would send more relevant feedback to the advertizers.

I love ads if they are selected by me. I do read a lot of ads in PCMAGS about Flash memory stick or USB flash memories and ads on Digital Cameras and MP3 players and electric Mopeds even.

So that is not the problem. I love ads! If I choose them myself ok

The problem is to be locked into using a web interface and me not have the freedom to use imap.

The purpose is to find a way to make me read the ads.

My sugestion is. Make it valuable for the user to read them. I am motivated to read ads on imap emails and give feedback but not to be forced into a web interface.

How could Gmail make its ads more effective for both users and advertisers, especially for users who prefer to use IMAP? I know this is an old discussion but the answer to my question is very important I am

In late 2003 / early 2004 there was a long thread were the OP said they're planning an email service for 30 million users and asked forum members what they would like to have in such an email service. A few months later (April 1, 2004) a new email service (Gmail) was launched and within a few months reached 30 million users. Also a few months later that thread disappeared (back then when forum users deleted themselves all the threads they started were also deleted). So the OP here that was posted back then (six months after Gmail was launched) that his suggestions reach some Gmail representative.

I'm confused by this. Gmail does have IMAP available and you can use a desktop email client. I vastly prefer the web version of Gmail, but it does have the IMAP option. By the way, you don't see any ads in your inbox if you choose not to see the Promotions category. I see no ads in Gmail.

Well I wonder if the awaken-er is still following this.

I personally have no use for ads. There is nothing Gmail could do that would entice me to respond to an ad. I use POP3, I've never seen an ad in my Client Inbox. I also use the App. With the App I have seen ads, normally only one message in the Inbox that I ignore. The only reason I use the App is to check the Spam folder for the occasional rare legit message that shows up there. I rarely use the Web Interface.

Ads annoy me.

Ads annoy me.

If you disable inbox categories (social, promotions, etc.) in Gmail (app), you don’t see ads.

What device are you using?

The standard email apps won’t come up with ads. They might try email, but you could use a email filter to get rid of them.

Android, Yahoo Mail App shows ads but only if there are messages in the Inbox. I have 18 in the Inbox, one ad is shown in the list of emails. Not a huge deal. Even with 50+ emails it is normally one ad. The one showing right now is for Casino Plus. I use my email client for working with emails, only use the Yahoo App to check Spam.

I don't get a lot of emails in my Outlook accounts, today and yesterday I noticed Ads in the Inbox using the Outlook App.

So of the Apps I use, Yahoo Mail and Outlook show ads, Gmail ads (as Berenburger pointed out.) can be turned off.
