Now that many services have things like plus addressing, aliases, and subdomain addressing, along with passable anti-spam, I dropped my forwarders entirely and receive emails directly at my provider. Much simpler to manage one site rather than two, and I still hardly get any spam.
For just plain ol' good and reliable email service it can't be beat. I use the Mailstore service, which is $50 a year. The spam filtering is litterally second to none and offers blocking by country of origin. I prefer it to services such as Gmail, etc.

For some people it can be quite useful to utilize POBox.com's email forwarding service. You can set it up so that mail from multiple domains and hosts gets forwarded to your preferred location, and then you can send from all those addresses using POBox.com's SMTP. The spam filters are good and the service is reliable and inexpensive. Mailstore is very similar to Fastmail's service, yet offers twice the storage for the price (50GB). For those in the USA, POBox is closer to your time zone meaning the potential for better customer service response, though I wonder if Fastmail also utilizes USA personnel for cs.
