setting up online access to a local file

I want to create a link in a webpage that connects with a file in my fastmail website. Let us say that the file of interest is named "xyz.pdf" (the extension is arbitrary). It is in a fastmail folder called "abstracts". I have composed the following link: "http://fhapgood.fastmail.fm/abstracts/xyz.pdf" and placed it in the desired webpage. When I use my browser (Chrome) to go to that webpage and click on that link it cannot find -- cannot open -- that file. I can see that "xyz.pdf" is where it should be, in the local "abstracts" folder. What am I doing wrong? What should I try next?

In order to use a link like http://fhapgood.fastmail.fm/abstracts/xyz.pdf, you must create a website http://fhapgood.fastmail.fm/abstracts/ of type 'Files only' (select this option under 'Publish as' when creating the website) and select the folder 'abstracts' as the file storage target for this website.

Thanks. I think I have found the problem. We'll see.
