Lightbulb Domain popularity

Since there's been two threads in 24 hours about popularity of our domains, here's the real info... Of accounts that have signed up in the last week, 71% chose FastMail.FM. People tend to just pick the defaults... Of the rest, here's the percentage that picked each domain:
  • eml.cc: 16%
  • xsmail.com: 8%
  • myfastmail.com: 8%
  • ml1.net: 5%
  • 123mail.org: 5%
  • mailcan.com: 5%
  • mailbolt.com: 4%
  • fastem.com: 4%
  • mailworks.org: 4%
  • ftml.net: 3%
  • mailup.net: 3%
  • justemail.net: 2%
  • yepmail.net: 2%
  • letterboxes.org: 2%
  • f-m.fm: 2%
  • speedymail.org: 2%
  • swift-mail.com: 2%
  • fastemailer.com: 2%
  • fastmailbox.net: 2%
  • jetemail.net: 2%
  • emailuser.net: 1.5%
  • mailhaven.com: 1.5%
  • veryfast.biz: 1.5%
  • 2-mail.com: 1.3%
  • hailmail.net: 1.2%
  • mailftp.com: 1.0%
  • nospammail.net: 1.0%
  • imapmail.org: 0.9%
  • fast-email.com: 0.8%
  • fast-mail.org: 0.6%
  • fastmessaging.com: 0.6%
  • imap-mail.com: 0.6%
  • mail-central.com: 0.6%
  • ssl-mail.com: 0.6%
  • mailite.com: 0.4%
  • mailmight.com: 0.4%
  • emailgroups.net: 0.3%
  • fastimap.com: 0.3%
  • internet-mail.org: 0.3%
  • internetmailing.net: 0.3%
  • mailingaddress.org: 0.3%
  • mailsent.net: 0.3%
  • reallyfast.info: 0.3%
  • the-fastest.net: 0.3%
  • the-quickest.com: 0.3%
  • theinternetemail.com: 0.2%
  • veryspeedy.net: 0.2%
  • reallyfast.biz: 0.1%
And 4 domains didn't get chosen at all:
  • internet-e-mail.com
    internetemails.net
    mail-page.com
    mailandftp.com
It's interesting to see how popular eml.cc is. I discovered a nice domain the other day that costs $1000, and is quite similar... I'm wondering now whether we should buy it... We've never spent more than $100 on a domain before (that's how much fastmail.fm itself cost).

my guess is that eml.cc is popular because it is very short and contains no numbers (ml1.net) or special characters (f-m.fm) and xsmail.com because it is the shortest .com without numbers or special characters (2-mail.com)

This was my favorite. I think it's interesting to know why people selected what they did. I selected letterboxes.org mainly because we have an old brass mailbox in the lobby of the building where I live, and every day I walk past the big brass box with the word

on it. I also found it not to be

, plus I like the "org" extension as it matches my own domain extension... the one that's apparently never getting switched to fastmail.fm, but not by choice.

No. They wouldn't make much difference though--only a tiny proportion of addresses are aliases.

You might as well buy it Jeremy. If you're not millionaires yet, you soon will be!

BTW, the domain www.mailfm.net is still available if you're interested.

Question Domains

I just recently found out that .fm refers to Federation of Micronesia. What, then, does .cc refer to?

My experience with the fm domain has been good and I haven't had any problems (but it's nice to have a standard alias, such as mailworks.org, as an alternate). I'm wondering though if these alternate domains have caused any confusion or delivery problems. Just curious.

Though it may not mean much to dot-cc customers who only know of its world-wide functionality, the "cc" of dot-cc is technically a designation for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, a territory of Australia located in the Indian Ocean with fewer than 700 residents.

y not if its gonna be a popular domain name

i think spending $1000 on it will be justified if it is gonna be a popular domain name. i've been checking out email providers for like 5 years n my criteria for good email addresses is

1. short name -

i hate typing addys longer than 10 letters. the shorter the better.

2.easy to remember-

that's why fastmail.fm and letterboxes proved popular.

3. easy to pronouce/explain-

isn't easier to tell/pronouce to your frenz fastmail.fm than ssl-mail.com OR
letterboxes.net or .com than .org
and better not to get ur frenz mixed up with the other .cc .nu extensions.

4. names with letters close together so my fingers dun have to go all over the keyboard and risk a typo error-

e.g. dad.cc or wed.cc or was.cc or pop.pm
i guess which is why eml.cc is so popular at least that's y i chose it for my own addy.

for a domain to fit all the criteria is ideal but of course a bit too demanding

if the domain u are considering will fit into most of the criteria u have one confirmed user already

afterall since we are gonna use our fastmail email addys for a long time, might as well get us nice few ones that most us would like and use than many that we dun wanna use right?

We don't wanna to use domains with a dash in it. So, these domains are not popular:

Quote:
fast-email.com
fast-mail.org
imap-mail.com
mail-central.com
ssl-mail.com
internet-mail.org
the-fastest.net
the-quickest.com
internet-e-mail.com
mail-page.com

Maybe email.cc is popular because eml sounds like email and is an extension og Outlook Expressed saved emails. Just a thought.

The more I see it here, the more I wouldn't mind making an alias that uses the eml.cc domain.

The mailcan domain would be nice for a junk account. emailgroup might be nice for someone operating a mailing list.

Well I use mailbolt.com and eml.cc as alias.... The reason that i didnt use the fastmail.fm home domain was that ppl are likelp to misplace the .fm with .com some day or the other.... so when I tell someone my email Id..I use the .com one and when I mail someone I usually use the eml.cc one.

It is very surprising that around 8% of the users use xsmail.com as a homedomain.....try telling your email ID to someone waiting to get off at the next stop on a fast metro....

Yes, xsmail.com was the most surprising result for me too--all the others are in about the order that I was expecting.
