Pobelly--aren't you joining us on IRC?
Just curious, what channels/IRC nets do most Fastmailers congregate on?

I've turned on Syncookies now after chatting to K some more about them. I had to compile them into the server which is why we had the reboot today.

so, ummm... if i wanted some perspective on why syncookies do or don't break the protocol, are there any suggested places i look? something other than "uh-huh!"..."nuh-uh!"..."uh-huh!" newsgroup archives? otherwise, i'm sure i'll find something eventually...

The definitive reference is probably what K quoted from: http://cr.yp.to/syncookies.html

well, that was where i started, so that makes that easy... some of the refutations are a little... ummm... matter-of-fact. i guess i'll just accept 'em until i have a good enough grasp to form my own conclusions...

there just aren't enough hours in the day to not take the easy way out once in a while...

You just have to learn DJB's method of argument. It starts with the premise "DJB is always right". Then you simply have to listen and do what he says. It really simplifies discussions as long as everyone understands the basic rules...

Just curious, why are you disabling these? They are usually regarded as useful TCP extensions.

Actually ECN has no effect on the inbound side, the problem occurs only outbound, when connecting to sites with firewalls that don't recognize it.

Window scaling, at least, is incompatible with syncookies (I believe). The other 2 I can't remember where they came from--they're pulled from someone's advice I read somewhere; I'll try and read up some more...

Yep. That's never a good sign... POP was down (see the other thread about this). Which means that this bug isn't fixed after all...

I'm now reading the Cyrus IMAP code to see if I can work out where this is happening...
