Email clients can be quirky. For example I had runbox working without problems for 2 years on my iphone native email app. Then all of the sudden I was unable to send messages. Now, my time is truly $$$ when Im at work. The last thing I want is my email not working and unable to send messages for entire day or be forced to use the inconvenient PC rendered website.
A dedicated iphone App or web app means that email will always work. A web app also means that I can have one less icon on my phone.

@Berenbuger
I too decided to give Runbox a trial but I found the webmail interface to be difficult to adjust to - headers etc just take up too much space making it difficult (IMHO) to browse through mails.

Lack of 2FA is also an issue although I understand it may be implemented in the future . In all other respects Runbox seems very nice and fits the bill by being with the EEA area but I just know that over time the webmail interface will grate with me so whether I stay when the trial is up is in the balance

You can use Roundcube, which I much prefer for webmail access. It lack a few of the features of the proprietary interface but it's fine for every day use.

It's on https://runbox.com/roundcube/

They do tend to move slowly so things like 2FA and calendars are on the cards but don't hold your breath. For me, support and location outweigh the lack of those at present.

@filbert
Thanks for the link - roundcube is definitely nicer to use. Are runbox fully committed to maintaining it though ?
https://help.runbox.com/roundcube/

Although I suppose if they did decide to discontinue then one could consider what to do at that stage.

I think the gremlins got to that link and it should be https://help.runbox.com/roundcube/.
Looks like the help file hasn't been updated since Roundcube came out of testing.

I think they will keep it as it was only introduced a year or so ago after a lot of criticism of the old webmail interface, since superseded by the current one. There was a long thread about webmail at http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showthread.php?t=67376, so you can see there is some history.

I moved the other way. I currently have both RB and recently purchased FM. Mostly due to lack of support for mobile and lack of dedicated iphone app.

I have had FM and RB for years but recently dropped FM because I don't like new interface on FM

Same here.... and I don't like reducing the FM's classic interface functionality either....

I had a Fastmail account last year for a while and liked it a lot. However I wanted the possibility of using it also for business. Unfortunately The FM account did not have any formal mechanism to comply with the EU data protection requirement about transferring personal data outside the EU.

I have recently opened a RB account - servers being in Norway means it is recognised for EU data protection purposes - big plus for me. The RB webmail interface is a bit quirky though ( the compose window in particular) and I am still trying to get used to it. The Roundcube interface whilst more traditional is still on trial and loses some of the functionality of the main webmail interface.

I have been both FM & RB users for some days. RB's support is really great. but RB's webmail lacks some features which FM has. and FM has a native iphone app which I use everyday.

My experience is as an FM and RB user that RB does less jerking you around with format changes etc.
