I was the administrator on an early forum back in the Stone Age of the early Internet and it was horrible. I had to be on-call 24/7 in order to stop nasty posts, including truly vile stuff. It is an arms race between the nasties and forum admins. But, the worst problem, IMHO, are the ones who attack forum participants via DM and other means not visible to forum participants. Watch out what information you give when signing up for forums, and don't treat your contact information lightly!

Many a forum have been shut down due to spammers and spam farms by the sheer multitude of spammy posts and/or the inability of that forums' admin to get enough moderator's to handle it (either at all or quick enough).

But spammy posts seem to get less now since most people are transferring from forums to FB groups and pages I see threads becoming less and users becoming less active.
