I got an account on the current (beta) version of Protonmail, after a wait of about two weeks.

The announcement referred to by the OP is remarkably silent on IMAP access (not available in beta).

And on the influence of spirituality on Protonmail development:
"While it would still be possible to launch in the second half of December, this is unfortunately too close to the holidays and we won’t be fully staffed. We also want to avoid the first half of January due to Orthodox Christmas."
Somehow Jewish Hannukah isn't mentioned, neither is Muslim Mavlid, though they all are celebrated around the New Year.

Perhaps they're only referring to the religions reflected by members of their staff (not those of the season generally) and which, therefore, affects those individuals' availability for work on the official release during the holidays.
