Problem with Gmail Contacts

I have my Google contacts sorted in Last Name order but when I press the "To" Tab within Gmail my contacts are shown in first name order. How do I rectify this?

I don't think you can change that with any setting, but what I do sometimes is just type the first letter or two of the last name I am looking for and it brings up the list of those people--but with them listed first name, last name order. Even though I also have the contacts sorted by last name I typically just start typing the first name in the "To" field (if I know the first name).

It's not acceptable to me to use an email system that when I press the "to" tab does not show me my contacts. Do you have a view on an acceptable alternative to Gmail.

Google's systems are all oriented around their superior search functionality, and I find it works great for me. I have hundreds (maybe thousands) of contacts dating back to the beginning of email and letting Google search for them saves time over scanning a list of contacts, for me. I do the same with my 20-30,000 emails. Just archive them when done and use search to find something. So much faster and easier than using folders and labels. YMMV.

I just checked and I have 408 Google contacts. Less than I thought, but not a list I want to scan through looking for someone. Search is your friend!
