I tweeted to Edwin yesterday, about spamming on the forum:
https://twitter.com/EMDiscussions/st...9144016789510/ A short time later, I returned to EMD, and the spam had gone. At that same time, I noticed that Edwin was logged into the forum. I think the problem is there are only 2 active moderators on the forum - 1 in Australia, 1 in New York. Of course, "active" doesn't mean that they visit the forum every day or every waking hour! So, that is leaving a lot of time when the forum has no one to act quickly to remove any spam - it can be there for many hours before a mod logs in and removes the spam. That's why I asked Edwin to consider reviewing the moderators - we need more mods, we need them also spread out around the world (in different time zones), and willing to police the forum. |
Agreed, but I have to say that the two active moderators are doing a great job. When I report a spammer then almost in a few hours the spam(mer) is gone. But better is to come up with structural solution, so that these kind of ‘people’ cannot enter. Block at the front.

Yes, the moderators are doing a superlative job, for which I am hugely grateful.
I have unfortunately not been able to give EMD the attention it deserves recently - for quite a while in fact. Don't see that changing any time soon. When it comes to the spamming, the spammers appear to be human not bot spammers, so they are bypassing the checks in the same way any other new forum user would. Also, despite posting Korean-language spam, they're actually in the US (their IP address ranges are shared by several long-time forum users - no connection, I'm just saying that they're using a common provider of some kind). Can only assume they've been paid to spam as widely as possible, and given a script to cut and paste into forums. So programmatically, there would appear to be little that can be done to catch them. That doesn't solve the problem, but it perhaps gives a better idea of what's involved. |
Having more human moderators would expedite removing spam which slips through the programmatical net.

This is such a nice place to be and you and your staff are the reason for that!! Dont worry about not being active.... Things are pretty good here :) |

Also, is it not possible to require every new member's first n posts to be approved? Such a thing can be very irritating if it takes many days before anyone grants it, but - especially if we had a few more moderators - I think it would be worth trying. |
