Anybody still using @AIM.com ?

I still have a couple of free @aim.com email accounts.

I had them set up in Outlook 365 desktop.
Between Sep 10th & Sep 13th (2021) IMAP stopped working for these accounts.

I tried changing my settings but no luck.

I can still log into webmail.
I can log in with name@aim.com, name, or name@aol.com .

I sent a message to the PostMaster but only received an automated reply.

I tried setting up POP retrieval in GMail. (Check mail from other accounts).
That didn't work either.

There doesn't seem to be an option to automatically forward email.

I am not a Verizon customer.

AIM I thought was AOL if this is the case please try: https://help.aol.com/articles/how-do...ve-my-aol-mail

CyberSmurf 7 Nov 2021 07:42 AM

Thank you, but I have already seen that page.

Are you currently using AOL mail, and are not a a Verizon customer?

chrisretusn 7 Nov 2021 03:03 PM

I do. Unfortunately I use it with POP3 not IMAP.

The account is actually a former netscape.net account. I now use aim.com for that address. The netscape.net address, as well as aol.com are also functional for this account.

I am using AOL URL's for POP3 and SMTP.

pop.aol.com:995
smtp.aol.com:465
Both using SSL/TLS

That automated reply is hilarious.

I'm glad that it's working for you.

I tried setting up POP in both Outlook 365 and GMail.
Maybe it's just my accounts.
I thought that it might be my ISP (Shaw.ca), but I would think that wouldn't affect setting up POP in GMail.

I event tried changing the password on one of my accounts, but same results.

I'll have to try from a different computer in a different location and see if that makes a difference.

btw, the error message trying to POP from GMail was
Quote:

There was a problem connecting to pop.aol.com
Server returned error: "Connection timed out: There may be a problem with the settings you added. Please contact your other email provider to verify the correct server name and port."
I was using 995 w SSL.

I went ahead an setup an IMAP account in my email client (Claws Mail).

I used the information I found here to configure this account.
https://help.aol.com/articles/downlo...mail-with-imap

One thing I had to do was generate an app password. Since I already did this for my POP3 access account. I used that password and it all worked.

Basically to log in via my browser, I use one password. To log in with my email client I use the password created when generating an app password.

CyberSmurf 12 Nov 2021 06:32 AM

Thank you chrisretusn.
Setting up an App Password got things working again.

App passwords

Some apps or services require you to enter your username and password to connect to your Aol account. If you’re not comfortable sharing your password with that service, Aol can generate an App password, a one-time password to use with just that app/service, instead of your normal password.

When do I need an app password?

Some older, less secure apps/services don't support Aol's own sign-in method and ask you to give your username and password directly to the app/service instead. In cases where you do not see the Aol sign-in box, you should generate and use an app password.
And imap.aim.com and smtp.aim.com still work too. :)

Glad to be of help.

Based on this App password thing, it seems that AOL is Yahoo in disguise. :):)

CyberSmurf, long time no see?

It's been quite a few years since you last posted on the forum, here's hoping that you'll stick around in your moderator role, and help out the very few remaining mods still active here.

I was seeing a page saying that they were both part of Verizon.
Now when logged into AOL, under Options, when I click Terms of Services I am taken to ...

I checked my Yahoo account and it appears that I had set up an App Password for "Outlook Desktop". I had only been using my laptop for a few months and I was still trying to get things working. I only have vague memory.
With Yahoo I did receive an email warning me to set up an App Password.
Quote:

Hey Yahoo Member,

Head’s up: As of 20 October 2020, Yahoo Mail will no longer support third-party applications (such as third-party email, calendar, or contact applications) using outdated sign-in methods. That just means if you’re still signing in to your Yahoo account via another email application, like the default email application on your phone, you need to make some quick updates to ensure your mailbox isn’t interrupted.
I didn't receive any warning with my AOL accounts, and the cut-off was almost 11 months later than Yahoo.

chrisretusn 13 Nov 2021 12:18 AM

If I remember correctly... I just checked my emails... Well that's amazing, I still have the notice, received it on Sep 14, 2020.

I forgot about it, until one day I couldn't get in using my email client. In fact when I was troubleshooting IMAP, I forgot and was scratching my head for while trying to figure it out. I getting in via the web, but not my client. I checked my password program and saw the note for App Password. Ah Ha! :D

It was the "older, less secure apps/services" that threw me.

I didn't think that "older" applied to Outlook 365.
