Don't Drive Drunk - Steve Wonder

And if you don't mind a ready-made list, here is one.

Chevrolet - Stray Dog

:)

I read once that Florian Schneider has admitted to deliberately including a soramimi in Autobahn: when he wrote the lyric "gefahren, fahren, fahren mit der Autobahn" he had the Beach Boys' Fun, Fun, Fun firmly in mind. :)

Which leads neatly to two more (both surfing songs):

Fun Fun Fun -- the Beach Boys
Surf City -- Jan and Dean (what kind of vehicle is a "woodie"?)

D'oh!

How could I have forgotten Jan and Dean's biggest hit, Little Old Lady from Pasadena? :o :)

Some of these are a bit tenuous...

Everything But The Girl : Driving
Bill Cameron : 511 Highway
Jace Everett : That's the kind of love I'm in (the second verse relates to driving)
Wilson Pickett : Engine no. 9
Alison Krauss & Union Station : The road is a lover
Beth Orton : Stolen car
Billy Ocean : Get out of my dreams
The Animals : I ain't got you [/"I got a '65 Cadillac"]
Tom Robinson Band : 2-4-6-8 motorway

Thanks everyone for your contributions so far. There are many I have not heard before but will "Spotify" listen, and add to my playlist the ones that work for me.

Also, trying to avoid road crash songs :)

So the Eagles' Life in the Fast Lane (which I've just remembered) wouldn't suit you then. :)

Just remembered another which would fit your Christmas playlist as well ;) -- Michael Bolton, Driving Home for Christmas. :D

Trying to avoid crash songs, try taking the bus instead!

Magic Bus - The Who
Waitin' for the Bus - ZZ Top

;)

The Beach Boys -- I Get Around
The Beach Boys -- Little Deuce Coupe
The Beach Boys -- Little Honda
Mungo Jerry -- In the Summertime
The Beatles -- Magical Mystery Tour
Jan Hammer -- Highway Made of Glass

Michael Bolton did a version of that too?? I know Michael Ball did, I prefer it over the Chris Rea one. My favourite version of that song is probably Madeline Bell's.

^ Oops -- you're right, I got the wrong Michael. :o

Tsunami 9 Dec 2011 03:07 AM

does REM's "Drive" count, even when the title is probably metaphoric?

Some forgotten ones in your list:

"Radar Love" - Golden Earring
"Riders on the Storm" - The Doors
"LA Woman" - The Doors
"There is a Light that never goes out" - The Smiths
"Cars" - Gary Numan
"Boys of Summer" - especially the DJ Sammy cover since it doesn't only refer to the Cadillac but the video is full of road scenes
"Stan" - Eminem ft Dido
"Ride" - The Vines
"Motorcycle Emptiness" - Manic Street Preachers

Tsunami 9 Dec 2011 03:18 AM

Some more:

"Driver's Seat" - Sniff 'n the Tears
"Sleeping in my car" - Roxette
"Pretty fly for a white guy" - The Offspring (the line about cruising in his Pinto)
"Autobahn" - Kraftwerk
"Diane" - Hüsker Dü (although the cover by Therapy? is more famous)
"Dragula" - Rob Zombie (a Dragula apparently is some type of car, not sure if it exists in reality or only in some movie)
