Just took a look since a long time and saw many are left in silence... :(

n5bb 4 Jul 2016 12:06 PM

Bruce, I just sent you a photo. Hopefully my face is large enough in that "action" shot from last weekend. I didn't start growing the beard until 6 months ago, and I'm keeping it trimmed at the length shown.

I have been around computers a long time, many years before email was available. My first computer programming was on a Olivetti P101 (Programma 101) while I was in high school in about 1969, followed a couple of years later by Teletype and punched card access to the University of Texas CDC6400 mainframe computer. I was sending Amateur Radio messages (using Morse Code and FSK with a mechanical Model 15 Teletype machine) in the early 1970's, and these were essentially early forms of email. By 1980 I was using my second personal computer (a Zenith Z89), a couple of years before the IBM PC was introduced. In the early 1980's I was a member of SAHUG (San Antonio TX Heathkit User group) and we had a BBS (which was another predecessor to email). Around 1980-1982 I helped maintain the GTE Telenet (early packet switched network) terminal in Austin, TX. In the mid-1980's I had a Western Union EasyLInk account (an early electronic mail system before the Internet):

Time for an update

Just sent you a new pic too, Bruce. Thanks!

somdcomputerguy 4 Jul 2016 12:46 PM

Just added your pic to the 'EMD member gallery', Bill. It is just great to tie faces to names. I've had an 'official computer relationship' since the mid 80's, and for 4 or 5 years ran a BBS (RBBS) starting in the late 80's. At the time I was an 'advanced' computerguy, I used a 2400 baud modem instead of a 300 or 1200, but I thought 9600's were just a 'fad' and weren't too necessary yet..

And since Allders of Croydon (and the arcade that ran through it) are now long gone (I think they went bust in 2012, or not long after), that really shows the age of that pic!;)

I have uploaded a more recent (2015) pic to my FM file storage, and will be submitting it, but even that one is a bit out of date, since my hair is now thinner and lighter; my current crew cut makes me look like Skin'ead O'Connor. :D

I have updated the original picture (so new picture, original userID),
although the picture comment contains links to both original and new

In September 2012, to be more precise....

sterdeus 25 Oct 2021 06:21 AM

I'm glad to see this page is still up. I would say it's time to update my photo but I've aged like a fine wine sitting beside a hot furnace.

somdcomputerguy 25 Oct 2021 08:18 AM

Yep. The gallery is still up. It's hosted by Fastmail and uses their 'photo gallery' option in Files|Websites. I may use a different gallery software/script, but I'm gonna try to keep the images where they are.

- Bruce

eta: Maybe I should clarify just to clarify: by 'hosted by Fastmail' I meant the files are 'in' an account I have with Fastmail. The 'EMD Photo Gallery' is 'run' only by me and has nothing to do with the Fastmail company or the Email Discussions forum.

That's not surprising. That several still come here almost 20 years later is a bit more surprising.

Thanks for this photo page. But when I view the link (https://emdpics.somdcomputerguy.com/) in either the Firefox or Edge browsers, the display is incorrect, usually after GDG. All later entries are missing thumbnails and some white text is inserted. I can click on the empty area where the thumbnail should be and see the large photo, but obviously something is broken when I view the page.

The behavior is erratic, so I wonder if it's some rate limiting put in by Fastmail after the recent attack.

Hmm, I just noticed this myself, after your post. I was at that 'gallery' sometime in the past several weeks, it was OK then and from what I can see of the error text being displayed now it appears to be a permissions error. I'll have a look at my Fastmail file storage.

- Bruce

somdcomputerguy 28 Oct 2021 11:21 AM

Well I was misreading what I could see of the text being displayed. It's not permission issues. It appears the gallery loads better at this URL - http://images.somdcomputerguy.com/EMDpics/ than it does from this one - https://emdpics.somdcomputerguy.com. The only difference I can think of off the bat is because of the http via https thing..

- Bruce

eta: I believe that had much to do with this issue. Use - http://emdpics.somdcomputerguy.com instead.

n5bb 28 Oct 2021 12:04 PM

Thanks, Bruce! http://emdpics.somdcomputerguy.com/ is working great. My photo isn't too many years old -- it was before the pandemic, but it shows my grey hair and beard I started a few years ago. But I have lost over 60 pounds since that photo - on purpose!

Meanwhile, I've gone in the opposite direction. :(

I retired two years ago (my employer of 32 years gave me a departure deal I could not refuse). Shortly after I retired, the pandemic threw a wrench into my retirement activity plans. I was obese and again gaining weight. My doctor convinced me that the problem wasn’t going away on it’s own and that I had to take significant actions to lose weight. I slowly lost weight for a few months, but I’m an analytical guy (electrical engineer) and didn’t have a good grasp on the actual calories in each meal and how many I needed to eat in a day. In February I found a great iOS app (Lose It!) which lets you look up nutrition in common foods and chain restaurant foods or scan bar codes on foods from grocery stores. You can track your daily calories and your weight and blood pressure. That was what it took for me to get serious about calorie counting, and I have been losing an average of 1.6 pounds a week over the past 8 months by limiting my calories to 1500 per day. My blood pressure is down in the normal range as the result of my weight loss.

Getting back to the subject of this thread: I’m building a new house now (after demolishing my old house two months ago) and I’m hoping that after all the delays it will be complete around March of 2022, when I should get down to my target weight. I will take a nice photo of myself in my new house at my new weight then and post it here. :D

Sounds like your browser is like mine Billy (Im on an older broswer (IE6)) and sometimes it misses some of the images and ya just see a box..... I have my max connections set to 48 but I believe the max per server is 20... (And thats any server not just that one)

I just saw Edwins picture...he is amazing looking!!

I was using the latest Firefox and Edge browsers on Windows 11. See the later posts - it was due to using the https: version of the URL. You should use:

Didn't Fastmail have problems displaying images recently?

It's about time some of you forum members, who have not yet supplied a photo to Bruce's EMD Photo Page, say 'cheese', take a selfie, and submit your mugshot!

It's nice to put a face to a name! :)

You aren't expected to do anything you don't feel to. I maintain the gallery, on Fastmail's server(s), and don't charge anybody to 'publish' their photo on it, and I certainly expect nothing from nobody.

I thought most people on the Gallery have left the forums long ago.
Today I checked one by one, and was quite surpized to see how many of us are still active here in the 2020's.
Not a few people are active here for more than 20 years (more than Facebook...)

n5bb 26 Dec 2023 03:47 AM

My EMD photo is 7.5 years old, when I weighed 95 pounds more and had a beard and was still in my early 60's. I should upload a new photo. I will have been a member of EMD for 20 years this upcoming May. I purchased a Fastmail account in April, 2004, and discovered EMD the following month.
