After 10 years, I'm off to Google Apps

Well, after a few years of being lazy at renewal time, I've finally made the switch and have dropped my FastMail account and migrated by domain over to Google Apps.

FastMail has been a great place...

Me too ... hope it wasn't me!

I'm hoping the fact that I just decided to sync all my folders with Windows Live Mail and it had kittens has nothing to do with the current outage! Coincidence? It seemed to die as soon as the folder...

I concur :)

Yup.

FastMail are fantastic value for money, but of course the recent downtime was very disappointing for a paid for service.

For all of us that were lulled into a false sense of security, the...

Poor bloke - what a way to have to spend your birthday!

And yes, where are Rob, Bron et al through all this? Presumably working on the problems ...

My account still down, but my backups are all...

Facts

There IS a disk array (there are two 4TB (4000GB) RAID6 arrays), but unfortunately one suffered the loss of 3 drives.

The overall infrastructure redundancy, including a better way of managing a 4TB...

Sitting in the middle

I'm not bailing per se, but I've arranged my email in a better way now to compensate for any future downtime on FastMail's part.

I'm just lucky that I'm able to do this, and have the technical...

Hmm ...

I bow to John's superior knowledge on this one, but comments from Jeremy including "We have learnt a lot from this failure - we haven't had a RAID array fail before so we haven't really known what it...

When we're back up ... BACKUPS :)

Someone mentioned this lil utility in one of the posts and it looks really good:

Incremental Backups of your IMAP store down to your local...

Again ...

... changing servers is not the issue. Any one server can fail.

It's knowing that the infrastructure can cope with the loss of hardware and carry on going. Whcih means load balancing, server...

That's about right ...

Quote from Bron in July:

"To improve stability and performance: Two new 4TB arrays in the past month. We're working towards installing a much more efficient POP and IMAP proxy, alleviating the load...

Whilst we're at it ..

RAID systems are only as good as the monitoring and alerting that goes along with them.

You guys are having a realy horrible run of luck if a RAID6 got hosed, but RAID systems have diagnostics which...

Yup - sounds good to me

I now have something similar, but the fly in my ointment currently is that 1&1's domain management doesn't extend to providing MX records as backups to 1&1's MX. That said, with a 99.9% SLA, I'm not...

Lower MX wouldn't help

I may be wrong here, but if mail.messagingengine.com is still responding as your MX server, your mails will never be being sent to a lower priority MX.

The issue is not that the MX is not...

Not always ;)

The DNS for my domain is managed by my web host. The MX record is a part of the DNS record for my domain.

The fact that I've changed my MX record does not need time to propogate around the web - in...

Fix the root cause

I agree.

Don't patch the service. It needs the underlying cause resolved.

Your infrastructure just shouldn't be configured the way it currently is. This has been raised before, and it seems little...

Thumbs down OK, time to weigh in on this one

FastMail boys (that means you Jeremy, Rob, Bron) - This is bad.

Incidentally since the last outage you had in July (not half as bad, but still ...) it's been fine for me.

What concerns me is at the...

Boy do I feel sheepish ...

:|

I blame Outlook :)

Thanks to Bron and Kurian for realising the level of my stupidity.

Outlook 2003 had created a "Junk E-mail" Folder, FastMail was looking for a "Junk Mail" Folder, which for...
