If I'm not mistaken, plain text is displayed using your browser's font for monospace / fixed width font. So, what you want to change is your browser's preferences. What browser are you using?

Another vote for namecheap for it's control panel. It also allows you to have more than 1 person to administrate a domain. Dreamhost is also pretty good.
